The Hostelz.com Review
Maria Vittoria Hostel is located only a few minutes walk from the Termini station and is a great place to base yourself in Rome. Many of the major attractions in Rome are within walking distance. You can catch the metro or bus to the Vatican City. At first approach to the hostel at night the street seems a little scary with a lot of people loitering, but there were no problems and it seemed safe. The hostel is accessed through a locked door on the street which leads to a courtyard and the building in which the hostel is located.

The hostel is basically an apartment with four rooms, one shared bathroom and one private bathroom that is for the use of one of the rooms. The rooms are large and come with towels and extra blankets. The hostel is clean and tidy. The kitchen is well equipped and each room is allocated space in the fridge. There is no lounge so the kitchen is the only room to socialise in. This hostel is best for those who are more interested in sightseeing than in partying. There is a request for guests to be quiet after 10pm. The area is very quiet at night.

Breakfast of toast (biscotti) and jam and tea or coffee is provided. Guests can also help themselves to tea or coffee during the day.

Maria is very friendly and helpful and provided a map and information on the main attractions in Rome. She spoke excellent English which is useful if your Italian is quite limited. She does not stay at the hostel but provides a phone number to contact her.

This is an excellent hostel and a great base for a wonderful stay in Rome.

Great location, great host
We have stayed at Maria's hotel in February. The location is excellent, it takes about seven minutes to walk to the Coloseo, the supermarket is close, the Termini station (which is a big terminal for buses and trains) is about fifteen-minute walk. Maria's a very welcoming host. The rooms were clean, the kitchen equipped, there was Italian coffee always available. Sharing the bathroom was not a problem. Maria also had some good travel books on Italy and Rome. Great place to stay!

My parents, my husband, and I have just returned from Rome. We stayed for four days in the apartment in Via Mecenate (the one closer to the Colosseum). A quite big, nice apartment, cleaned daily by a maid -- two rooms, very well equipped kitchen, a nice bathroom, and the area so nice and quiet while being within a walking distance to Termini and Colosseum and even closer to the Vittorio Emanuele Metro station. what more would one need? Also in the evening we felt quite safe around, with people in the street until late in the night. It was very comfortable with a couple of excellent restaurants and gelaterie within few minutes from the apartment. There are a couple of guides to Rome (and maps) in the apartment. Maria also gave us a map and an info sheet summarizing the public transportation around Rome (how to get to places of interest). Definitely it was a very good choice for us and if we go to Rome again one day, I will for sure check if it's possible to stay there again.

I agree that this is a very good option in Rome -- great location and price. We were there during the first week of January and enjoyed our stay at the Mecenate apartment. We would stay there again if we wanted to revisit Rome. But it's not really a five-star experience. The "breakfast" is whatever you put together yourself from the kitchen. Maria supplied us with kitchen equipment, coffee, tea, milk, and yogurts, and some packaged sweetbread snacks. This was ok for us, but having to prep your breakfast in a shared kitchen (one other room) requires a lot of cooperation with the co-tenants. The sweetbreads were more like the Mexican Pan Bimbo stuff -- Hispanic Twinkies, if you will -- than real bread. We ended up picking up some really good breakfast rolls at the excellent bakery near the corner of Merulana and Mecenate to compensate. Also, we were a little concerned about the security of our room when we found a set of keys in the hallway -- available to the other guests -- that opened our door! A little exploration revealed that they also opened the other guests' room. So I guess just be aware that any valuables you leave in your room may not be as secure as you think. Still, the location is fantastic, and having a kitchen to cook what you want in the evening was a terrific asset and a real money-saver. The beds were worn but very comfortable, with cheery comforters, and the rooms were quiet and adequate in every way for the price. Maria was especially helpful and kind.

Alberto and Maria's Hostel was a wonderful respite from the hot and crowded city that is Rome. Maria was nice enough to give us a four-bedroom to ourselves (it was just my boyfriend and I) and although there was no air-conditioning, the ceiling fan kept us cool. This was also one of the few places that provided actual drying racks for our laundry. The bathroom that we shared with the the other room was clean and provided places to put our toiletries. Maria was kind enough to meet us at the apartment and gave us a map of Rome, circling all the places to visit and the different public transportation options. There were also several guide books on Rome available for loan there. The apartment on Via Mecenate was terrific and really close to the Colosseum -- it was so nice, we stayed an extra day!

Rome was our first stop in Italy, so after a very long day of traveling from the States, I really wanted a nice, quiet place to crash. The Mecenate House was fantastic! Maria was there waiting for us when we arrived, and stayed to give us maps and a thorough introduction to the city. The apartment was very clean, the rooms very big, and the courtyard quiet at night. We were given our own keys to every door needed to get in and out, so we could come and go as we needed to. I felt very safe. It was an incredible value for the money, and we will always stay there when we return to Rome. It set a high standard for hostels that unfortunately many of the other places we stayed after this could not obtain.

Maria was simply fabulous. My sister and my boyfriend stayed at Mecenate hostel for two nights in a huge and clean private room. We had a queen size bed and a comfy double-decker bed. The room was spacious. There's a kitchen in the house and it has all the necessary cooking utensils and equipment. Maria was really friendly to us Asians. She provided so many details about Rome and gave us maps and bus directions and numbers to take. The whole entire place felt really safe. The only thing was that it is quite a distance from the central Termini and the map to that hostel wasn't quite detailed enough. But nevertheless, all the hard effort of finding the hostel was worthwhile when you finally settle into the house. That house was pretty comfy. Others in the same building were really friendly, too. Just two rooms and a really clean bathroom that they clean everyday! The best part was that even though we booked the room for three nights and had to leave on the second night due to train schedules, Maria had no qualms about it and even trusted us to just leave the money and keys in the room. She really made a difference in our stay at Rome. Come experience it for yourself and you'll know that everything said here is true. :) Maria is the best!

Maria Hostel is wonderful! I was there this summer, and having experienced many different hostel during my stay in Europe, I can say this is one of the best places I have seen! The price is VERY good for Rome, especially for such a central location. It's a five-minute walk to the train station Termini, where you can also find the two subway lines and a bus terminal. The place was clean and comfortable, and the room was big (we had a triple with separate but private bathroom), with TV and fan. The use of the kitchen made it really simple to eat well for a low price. The breakfast wasn't much, but this is Italy remember! And you can buy what you want and keep it in the fridge if you need more! Maria gave us tons of information (maps, city highlights, bus/Metro) about Rome. I also loved the fact that it is quite small, only 3-4 rooms. It is a small apartment...you really feel at home! I would definitely go back!!!

Tired as we were, we felt immediately at home at this hostel. Maria is great. The location is very quiet, close to the station and secure. There's a great supermarket nearby and you can walk to many of the attractions. The shared kitchen has everything you need for preparing meals. The bedroom and bathroom were spotless, the bathroom having everything you could possibly need. If we're in Rome again, we will definitely stay here.

We stayed there for four days this summer after seeing the good ratings here — and we were not disappointed. We were welcomed by Maria at 9 p.m. on a Sunday and in the kitchen we were supplied with a free map of Rome and sightseeing tips. The room (double with private bathroom) was clean and had a fan so we could be cooled down in the hot summer nights. I would go there again!

This place has a great location. It's within walking distance to most of the main tourist attractions. The hostel is safe and well equipped. You can cook your own meals in the very well equipped kitchen. Maria, who runs the hostel, is lovely and very helpful. The area is quiet.

This was my first time in Rome and I could not compare this hostel with other places. It was basic but comfortable, and had everything you need in the kitchen or in the bathroom. It was also quiet, and had a good bed. It's cheap, and five minutes from the Coliseum.

I can't believe it — this place is a great value for your money. It's clean, well situated at both locations and very friendly. Maria had a kitchen anyone could use with some pots. If you want to save more money you can do what we did: find a store, buy some pasta and make you own dinner, lunch, etc. She also had a fridge to store food or drinks. Having been to Rome and Italy numerous times I know that a croissant and coffee is a normal breakfast for Italians; to expect more would be unrealistic. We will definitely be back. There are actually two locations and we stayed at both. One was closer to the Coliseum and had a shared bathroom but only two rooms. The other location had a private bathroom option but more rooms—four, I believe. Unfortunately I cannot remember which location had which, but both were equally as nice.

We were there on July '04. The location to Termini is perfect. It was a bit confusing, though, to find the B&B for the first time. The room was quite equipped, with TV, bathrobes!!, a ceiling fan, even a sofa, but the floor was not clean (not that dirty, but needs some mopping). The wc/shower was excellent: all clean and equipped with toiletries or shower soap if you forgot to bring them! This was my first time using a shared wc/shower and I didn't have complaints at all. I didn't even have to queue, since only two rooms use it. Maria provided basic breakfast, biscotti and tea/coffee, which was not enough for me, but then 52 Euro for a double room and close to Termini, what else can you expect?
