Southwest of the Monti Sabatini is the town of Formello, within the regional park of Veii. Formello is located in the metropolitan city of Rome, but has a rich history all its own. With picturesque Italian landscapes surrounding this charming town, Formello is a great destination for a relaxing stay in Italy.
Settlement of this area began back in prehistoric times, and to this day, visitors can see remnants of the archaeological sites associated with the ancient city of Veii. After this former Etruscan city was destroyed in 396 BC, the region remained mostly uninhabited until Pope Adrian I settled here – creating a grand estate, his Domusculta Capracorum, which was ruined in Saracen attacks in the ninth century. Eventually, the area became a Roman territory in the 11th century, under the possession of the Basilica of San Paolo fuori le Mura.
Visitors who stay at a hotel or a hostel in Formello have the opportunity to take in some of this town’s rich history, exploring the landmarks that exist in the city to this day. From the front door of your hostel or hotel, tourists can walk the streets of this ancient city – visiting the Church of San Lorenzo, with a bell tower and frescoes by Donato Palmieri; the Palazzo Chigi, which contains the Archaeological Museum of the Countryside of Veii; the church of San Michele Arcangelo, and the destroyed 17th century Villa Chigi-Versaglia.
To get to your hotel or hostel in Formello, you can travel by bus or taxi from the airport in Rome. Tourists who plan to spend more time exploring the region should consider renting a car, as there is a lot to see within the borders of the metropolitan city of Rome. Even just a drive through the surrounding landscapes gives travelers a great taste of what Italy is all about.
