Xitang is a beautiful, ancient Chinese water town, with thousands of years of history. The town is located in the Zhejiang Province, in the Jiaxing city, and is easy to reach from the nearby Shanghai city. Even with traffic Xitang can be reached within two hours from Shanghai. It is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle (and pollution) or the Shanghai city life. Xiang is famous for its cobbled streets, old buildings, and ancient charm.
Traditional Chinese culture involves a lot of feng shui and hidden meanings, particularly in the architecture -- this is no different in the Xitang. You can take a guided or self-guided tour of the city and learn about the significance of the one hundred and four bridges, one hundred and twenty-two ancient lanes, and design and structures found throughout the town. Though Xitang can be made into a day trip from Shanghai, it’s recommended to at least spend a night in the town -- this will give you the opportunity to experience the town without the tourist day-trippers.
Accommodation in Xitang is much cheaper than in Shanghai, and of good quality. Some of the cheaper guesthouses and motel or hotels, don’t have English speaking staff, so learning some Chinese before heading the Xitang or China in general will be greatly beneficial. Xitang hostels and guesthouses are the cheapest accommodation options, however there are also luxury hotels available. All accommodation provides Wi-Fi (though the connection isn’t always the best, and VPN is not usually provided, so make sure you arrange this before arriving in China). Hot water showers, linen, towels, and breakfast are normally provided. Breakfast usually includes a cooked Chinese-style breakfast.
