Many hotels and hostels claim to offer a double room, but sometimes it is technically NOT a double room. All they do is pushing two single beds together. You end up with this annoying gap between the two mattresses.
On Hostelworld and Booking you can preview photos of the room you are about to book. This will help to check if you will actually get a double room (with one bigger mattress) or a Twin Room (with actually two single mattresses).
It is also good to know that some hostels claim TWIN Room, but in fact you will be staying in a room withh one bunk bed. The result is the same, since it has two separated mattresses. However, one of you will have to climb up the bunk bed.
