Hostel One Paralelo is a friendly, colorful, and modern hostel in Barcelona that offers four-, six-, and eight-bed dorms and private rooms. The hostel has four floors with the main social space on the entry level and rooms above. It is part of the Hostel One chain (one of three in Barcelona). The shared space for the staff desk, lounge, and kitchen makes it easy to socialize. Single-stall bathrooms are on every floor, the kitchen is stocked, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building. Every day there are free city tours, free dinner, and a trip to the bar and club, all led by staff members. This hostel takes partying seriously, but also offers a quiet and comfortable place to sleep and group activities to see the city.
The Location
The hostel is located on a quiet street in the Poble Sec neighborhood, near the Paral-lel (L2/L3 metro lines) and Poble-Sec metro stops. The hostel is tucked away in among the residential buildings and small shops, but there's a sign visible from the street that marks the door. Arrive by metro from the train station or airport. The hostel is several blocks from Montjuic Park (a huge park with great views), one block from Carrer de Blai (a street with tapas bars), and within walking distance to the beach and La Rambla.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorms and shared rooms are available. Dorm rooms do not have locked doors, but offer lockable storage (bring your own lock or pay to rent one). Dorms have pod-style beds (a six-bed room), or metal bunk beds (an eight-bed room). The pod-style beds have a large personal space, curtains, a shelf, and a light. We think the pod-style rooms (six-bed and fewer) are much nicer than the eight-bed bunk bed room for privacy, sound, and amenities like lights and locker space.
There are one or two bathrooms with showers on each floor; all are modern and clean. The showers have good water pressure and hot water. Several bathrooms are small, but private single bathrooms have larger showers with space for personal items. There are many hooks to hang belongings in the rooms, bathrooms, and even in hallways.
Common Spaces
The main common space is downstairs in the open kitchen. There is a large dining table plus separate seats at a table with power outlets. Connected to the kitchen is a small area with a TV and floor cushions. In the morning, breakfast for (for which you must pay) includes milk, juice, cereal, fruit, toast (with jam, butter, chocolate spread), Spanish tortilla (egg and potato), eggs, and muffins! In a separate small room, there is a comfortable space with many books available. There is a patio, but it is not always in use. The layout of the hostel makes it easy to meet fellow travelers. The hostel staff engage in conversation with the guests and are involved in social activities, so it is natural to make friends or figure out what to do in Barcelona. Luggage storage in a room downstairs is free, accessed by the staff on duty.
Summary
This hostel caters to backpackers and younger travelers who want a social experience. The main event is the free dinner every night and the trip to the bar/club. Some spaces are quite small, like the pod-style dorm rooms and several bathrooms. The pod-style beds offer more privacy and personal space. The hostel has an elevator, but otherwise might be difficult to navigate for a person using a wheelchair due to additional stairs and small spaces. Overall, Hostel One Paralelo is a bargain for the comfortable, friendly, and helpful environment.
