Altafulla is a coastal town in the comarca (county) of the Tarragones, Catalonia. Altafulla sits in front of the Balearic Sea, sometimes called the Iberian Sea, part of the bigger Mediterranean Sea. Altafulla is known for its warm and quiet atmosphere.

Altafulla used to be a medieval fortification on the hills beside the River Gaia. The center of this fortification is the Castle of Altafulla. Around the castle, the feudal town of Altafulla grew in the eleventh century. The vestiges of this history and past are seen through Altafulla’s medieval roads, squares, and complexes. The town of Altafulla also has a beautiful and iconic walled quarter of Vila Closa known as the Walled City. The Vila Closa is part of Altafulla, surrounded with the medieval walls.

With its position as seaside town, Altafulla holds an old fishing harbor and fishing quarter (called Baixamar or Les Botigues del Mar) that dates back to the eighteenth century. With the help of merchants and fishermen, the town prospered in this maritime district.

Beyond the town is a stretch of forest, one of the remaining forests along Catalonia that has an impressive view of the sea. People then, as it is now, lived a simple and quiet life.

With this discovery, Altafulla was somewhat recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
