Erlangen is a university town in Germany, just near the city of Nuremburg. It is the home of the Erlangen-Nuremberg University, and it is also the location of many other institutes and businesses. Visiting Erlangen today, you can still catch a glimpse of the history of the town and the region, including the settlement of the city by the Huguenot people in the 17th century. The town attracts nearly a million tourists each year, so make sure you book your hostels well in advance.
The busiest time of the year for the people of Erlangen is the season of Pentecost, when the yearly Bergkirchweich Beer Festival takes place. Featuring craft and artisanal beer from around the local region, this festival is one for the history books. Book a hostel near the main events for the best experience – this festival happens in the early spring.
Gardens are possibly one of the biggest attractions in Erlangen. There are three major gardens in the city, each of which is the property of, and is maintained by, the university. The Botanischer Garten, or the Botanical Garden, is on the north side of the city center and was founded in the early 1600s; although, it became a botanical garden in the 1800s. You can check out the 4000 species of plants here from various parts of the world.
The Schlossgarten is the second of the gardens and is more of a park where you can relax. There are benches, lawns, shady trees, and fountains. Open to the public every day till 8 at night, this is a good place to bring a picnic from your hostel and unwind. The final garden in the city of Erlangen is the Aromagarten, which is the smallest of the three. This is mainly houses flowers and scented herbs. There is one other “garden,” which is the Sculpture Garden. Visit this one at night to check out the sweeping view of the city below.
