Broken Hill, one of the biggest mining towns in Australia located in the east, is home to a rich history of mining. You can discover some of the history by visiting places such as the Silver City Mint and Art Center and the Miners Memorial; however, the best way to get involved in it is to visit some of the mines themselves. They are located a short distance out of Broken Hill and you can take day trips to the small towns of Silverton or the Day Dream Mines and experience what it was like to be a miner back in the late 1800s, when the mining industry started to boom.
Besides the mining, Broken Hill is beautiful and has many other things that you can do or places you can visit. The Living Desert and Sculpture Symposium is a beautiful park and the Flora and Fauna Sanctuary features many indigenous Australian plants. It is also contains information on Aboriginal cultures and how they used the plants within the region. Other interesting things you can do are visit the Railway Historic Museum, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service Museum. As Australia is such an isolated place in many areas, this initiative was undertaken to provide efficient medical service and transport to hospitals for people in remote areas and is one of the only programs of its kind in the world.
Hostels in Broken Hill are located within the downtown area and are close to any amenities that you may need during your stay. Just ask your friendly Broken Hill hostel staff and they should be able to point you in the right direction.
