Known for its legends, stunning landscapes and forest regions, Tyrone is the largest of the six counties that are located in Northern Ireland. One of nine counties located in the province of Ulster, the region is landlocked.
Visitors will have no trouble finding accommodations in this county. The biggest problem they will encounter is what type of housing to choose that fits within their holiday budget. There are castles and family-run hostels, self-catering guest houses and cottages, RV parks and B and B’s throughout the region.
Some of the hostels offer guided tours of the area and an invitation to attend a pub crawl. Most hostels ask that you supply your own lock to safeguard your belongings. Many of the lodgings are equipped for anyone with a disability and for larger groups. Most of the accommodations will be of 3 or 4-star quality.
Families and those traveling alone will find an abundance of activities to fill their days. For those looking to spend some time looking for information about their ancestry, the Irish Emigration Museum and the Ulstar American Folk Park and Museum will be entertaining. Also not to be missed is the ever-popular RMS Titanic Museum. In addition to the tour, the museum offers a Sunday Afternoon Tea that promises 5-Star service and a separate menu for children.
Lovers of outdoor activity will be drawn to the circular walks, nature reserves, and traffic-free trails that abound. The bogs and forest parks offer a different view of the area. Thrill seekers will enjoy a side trip to Todd’s Leap where the activities include paintball, ziplining, archery, and wall-climbing. On-the-water activities are readily available and include fishing, canoeing, kayaking and rafting.
Golfers will not be short-changed on this trip, as the region boasts a number of historic and nationally-recognized golf clubs. Sports lovers will be drawn to the fields where Gaelic football and Union Rugby are played. Those who are culturally-minded will enjoy perusing the museums that can be found throughout the region. Shops and cafes, as well as good shopping are also readily accessible. There is even a beetling mill hoping you will pay a visit.
Oh, and just for fun, ask the locals to direct you to the sites where the Game of Thrones was filmed!
