Munich has a reputation as the beer capital of the world and it certainly lives up to that expectation. Bavaria is known for being laid-back and gemütlich, and Munich manages to combine this with poshness and sophistication.
If you are looking for a hostel in Munich, you may want to try to stay in the old city center (Altstadt). Other good locations are Maxvorstadt and Schwabing. Schwabing is particularly good if you like to party; this is where lots of students and young professionals live and it has a wide range of nightlife spots. Munich hostels tend to be on the expensive side, but you will be rewarded with high quality rooms and friendly service. If you are planning on visiting the Oktoberfest (September/ October each year), book your hostel well in advance since Munich will be packed. Try some authentic Bavarian food and order a beer in a one-litre glass at Hofbräuhaus.
