Ever dreamed of finding a hostel that feels more like a cozy home than a backpacker pit stop? I get it — when you’re traveling solo, safety, comfort, and a few easy-going friends can make or break your experience.

Shantee House in Budapest delivered all of that and more. I ended up feeling like part of a little travel family and, honestly, I can’t imagine a better spot for solo travelers who want a peaceful, social vibe without the chaos.

Here’s why Shantee House quickly became my home away from home.

Location - Quiet but Connected

Location---Quiet-but-Connected.jpg

Shantee House is tucked into a calm, residential neighborhood on the Buda side. It’s about a 5-minute walk to tram and bus stops, making it super easy to get downtown or across the river to the main tourist sights.

As a solo female traveler, I felt completely safe walking to and from the hostel, even after dark.

The area is peaceful, clean, and feels way more local than touristy — a really nice change of pace after a busy day exploring the city.

Social Vibes - A Chill Community Feel

If you’re looking for crazy party hostels, this isn’t it — and that's exactly what I loved. Shantee House has a relaxed, almost spiritual vibe with lots of shared spaces where people naturally chat, swap travel stories, or team up for city adventures.

There's a colorful garden, a tea corner, and a common area that feels like a friend’s living room.

They organize meditation evenings and occasional dinners, but nothing feels forced. I made friends just lounging around on beanbags and sipping tea — super low-pressure and really genuine connections.

Shantee House felt incredibly safe. The front door stays locked, and only guests have keys. Staff are around during the day, and the atmosphere is very respectful — people look out for each other.

The lockers were big enough for my entire backpack, and I always felt comfortable leaving my stuff around in the common areas.

Walking back from the tram late at night also felt safe thanks to the quiet, well-lit streets.

Price - Worth Every Forint

The price at Shantee House felt super fair for what you get. It wasn’t the absolute cheapest option in Budapest, but it included way more than just a bed: free coffee and tea, great social spaces, and a warm, peaceful vibe.

Towels weren’t included automatically but could be rented for a small fee. Breakfast wasn’t provided, but the kitchen made it easy to prep your own food.

Overall, I would 100% say it’s great value for money.

Final Verdict

I’d rate Shantee House a solid 9.5 out of 10.

It’s not a flashy or party-heavy hostel, but if you care about feeling at home, making real connections, and staying somewhere that actually lets you rest between adventures, it’s basically perfect.

The chill social vibe made it easy to meet other travelers without the pressure of a party scene. Plus, the garden and tea corner are honestly magical after a long day of sightseeing.

Pro Tip: Shantee House fills up fast in the summer and around holidays — if you’re traveling solo and want a bed here, book a few weeks ahead!
