The Hostelz.com Review
Southern Comfort Western Horse Ranch ranch truly lives up to its name. This is a backpacker, but also a horse farm. It's away from the hustle and bustle of town, and yet offers various activities on the farm or in the surrounding areas.
The Location
The farm is situated between Knysna and Plettenbergbay, in the famous area called the Garden Route in South Africa. It's not too difficult to find if you have directions, but you have to have your own transport.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There is such varied accommodation -- two-bed and six-bed dorms, double rooms with shared bathrooms, a tree house about six meters in the air, and a house with four double rooms (with a double bed and two single beds each) with a shared bathroom of two toilets and two showers and a kitchen. You can rent a room or the whole house if you have a big group. They have taken an old farmhouse with thick walls and all and turned it into this "shared" house -- it's really nice if you are into the whole farming adventure. All facilities are clean, but they seem a bit rundown.
Common Spaces
There is no communal kitchen that can be used, but they serve any meal on request. The eating area is very big, and the sitting area with TV is relatively small. They also have a big games room with table tennis, fireplace, pool table, and an outdoor pool. They provide info about things to do in the area. This is not really a party place, but rather for the nature lover. It's off the beaten track, and great if you just want to get away from the crowds for a bit.
Summary
This is a quiet, country place and a great base from which to do other activities, but it's not close to the town or nightlife.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews

We limped in late one night with a flat tire and severe 'flu, intending to make a quick stop on the way to Jeffrey's Bay. Our original intention was to camp in our tents, but the offer of a warm, well-priced room was impossible to resist. The next morning we enjoyed a lovely home-cooked breakfast, after which the ranch owner helped us fix our tire. This isn't a typical backpackers' hostel, but it is to my mind it's a great one, with hospitality in abundance. — XV Pilot (2005-02-27)

I did not spend time at the hostel. Without any doubt, however, my horseback riding experience and the hospitality of the staff were most excellent. I took a drive out there a few years back, and ever since I've made it my challenge to get back there. I am going again in October, and I would recommend this venue to anyone who wants to experience a real outdoor adventure. — David Petersen (2004-08-13)
