Amakaya Backpackers & Apartments is a hostel on the Garden Route in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa.
The Location
Amakaya Backpacker is situated right next to Plettenberg Bay’s taxi rank. Plettenberg Bay’s main street is less than five minutes walking from the hostel, while the beach is about 20 minutes walking from the hostel. The hostel is a steep road uphill from the beach. If you arrive by long distance bus such as Intercape, the hostel is 1.3 kilometre away. If you have your own transport you can park safely on the hostel’s property.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Amakaya Backpackers offers both dorms and private rooms. In contrast to many other backpackers in Southern Africa it is not possible to camp at the hostel. There are three dorms which vary in size. Although you can select a specific room when you make the booking, the management tends to put you in a random room. The eight-bed dorm has its own kitchen and is ensuite. It’s therefore also more spacious than the other rooms. Each room is equipped with lockers. The rooms and bathrooms are kept clean very well.
Common Spaces
Amakaya backpackers consists of several buildings on the property. You can sit in the garden and lay in the hammock, but the main common area is in the main building. Downstairs there is a living room with couches and a TV and also a kitchen to prepare your own food. A basic complimentary breakfast is prepared in the mornings. Upstairs there is a bar that is open from 6pm till 10pm. On the same floor there are a few private rooms. Drinks in the bar are reasonably priced. As it is a fully licensed bar, outside drinks are not allowed in the hostel. Hostel guests tend to hang out at the bar in the evenings, so this is a great place to meet fellow travellers and make plans for a night out in town. The bar is partially outside and offers a nice view over Plettenberg Bay.

Amakaya Backpackers is a nice and social hostel in Plettenberg Bay with good facilities. If meeting people is a priority for you, this might be your best bet when you book a hostel in Plettenberg Bay.

Location
• Travelling on the N2 as you enter Plettenberg Bay turn down Marine Way at the Shell Ultra City garage.
• After the next traffic circle follow the 'Amakaya' sign turning left into Park Lane. We are the last house on the right hand side, number 15.
• Travelling by Baz Bus? Just hop off in front of the gate and walk right in!
