Did you know that we have a ski resort in South Africa? Tiffindell Ski Resort is situated in the Southern Drakensberg on the slopes of Ben Mc Dhui, the highest mountain peak in the Cape (3001m). The ski/snowboard season is from June through Ausgust/beginning September, 100% snowmaking with some natural pow.
Essaouira is gorgeous, the beach is huge, and there are plenty of tourists (if you want there to be) to feel safe. It's a really nice break from the hassle of Morocco but there are no fewer shops or market stalls. Restaurants are a little pricey but only because I was on a 10£ a day budget! Haggle for the rooms when you get there because no one ever does and they overprice them a bit!.
I only stayed in Casablanca for one night so I didn't get to see much, but I felt that it wasn't all that. Al Hasan II Mosque on the coast is quite a sight though.
Kampala is one of the best places to be in the world. The transport is good (compared to New York) and the people are friendly.
Malkerns is an intresting place to be. The people are cool and so is the environment. No signs of guns anywhere. Oh, what a peaceful country.
Hi, I live in Empangeni, always have. It's quite a dangerous place, especially the rail area. Just be cautious and never walk alone or at night and you'll be fine! The temperature here is higher than that of any other nearby towns, so come prepared with sunscreen. The heat goes up to 45C with humidity to kill!
I think Muizenberg is a great town with lots to do. All my family liked it and not too far away is Cape Town with even more to do.
Fes is a great city. Traditional Moroccan goods, pottery, and leather in particular are great there.
Going to Marrakech is like changing dimensions, in the evening look for a tallish hotel overlooking the marketplace, entry to the roof is a dollar or two and to sip a beverage, watch the sunset and the smoke and smells of the evening meal is magical. Once you try the market by your lonesome you will hire a guide the next day! They know the maze, cost a little and protect you from the leeching street merchants who will hang a trinket from your shirt pocket and say you bought it. Hire the guide. I used a pair of headphones from the airplane to get privacy and while the average Moroccan is versed in 5 languages, they don't know "sprechen sie deutch?"... the general motto in shopping is: "if you look at it you bought it" or owe them something so you learn to look sideways or ahead but don't wear dark glasses, cause then they will assume you ARE looking :-) I should of bought a dasheeke day 1, to blend in more. My friends and I had a great time visiting the architectural sites
I went for a day and ended up staying for three months... Cintsa is that sort of place.
I love Segou and would return in a minute! Recommend Le Djoliba for food and rest and the trip on the Niger to the villiage that produces the traditional pottery! You will never match it or forget it!
Luxor is like so totally awesome! #1 tourist destination.
Djerba My girlfriend and I just spent one week on the island and there is nothing to rave about. The beaches are filthy and the island is built-over with one nondescript hotel after another. Males in the souks and markets can be extremely insulting to Western females ... especially young and pretty ones. The whole island is basically one large hang-out for large groups of Western European holiday makers.
The best one can do to get away is rent a car to get off the island to visit nearby desert communities and the mountains. There is little traffic on Southern Tunisia's highways.
St. Lucia I visited St Lucia in 1992 just after my 21st birthday as a part of a University of Port Elizabeth Geography 2nd year excursion. It was certainly a beautiful and breathtaking place where peace and the wonder of nature overwhelms you. It's a haven for the spirit where just being there relaxes your mind. The simplicity of life takes over and you become completely transgressed to a happier state of well-being. I would highly recommend it to anyone. I live in the UK now and miss Africa dearly. One of these days I will return to her and her wonder, especially St Lucia.
