Managua, Nicaragua, is the capital and largest city of the country, and acts as the administrative and financial center of Nicaragua as well. While it is not a large tourist destination, it often serves as a stop over between flights or international bus trips. Managua is large and it can be difficult to get around without taking taxis (but with the amazing exchange rate, you can afford to splurge on cabs).

Due to its lack of tourism, the hostels in Managua are few. They are located down in the central area, a short cab ride from either the bus terminal or airport. The size of Managua makes any service, amenity, or product easy to come by at an inexpensive cost. Do your specialty shopping in Managua -- many of the small communities in the region do not have the same service and product selection as the capital.

Managua has a large airport with small plane flights to remote Nicaraguan destinations such as the Corn Islands in the Caribbean. The bus terminal offers buses that reach Panama City in the south and the border of Guatemala and Mexico in the north.

While in Managua, a great night out for a sports lover is a baseball game -- it is the national and passionate sport of Nicaragua and going to a game is an unforgettable experience. Tickets are extremely affordable. Soccer is still large and exciting, but baseball wears the crown here.
