Managua Backpackers Inn Reviews

Managua is not on the typical backpacking trail in Central America and not many hostels are available, but Managua Backpackers Inn is the most famous option and well-known place in the city, as all taxi drivers seem to know it.

The Location

It is conveniently located only ten minutes walking from the bus station, where you can catch catch a bus to Leon or Granada. It is also possible to catch a taxi for a few dollars that only takes five minutes or less. Managua has quiet a reputation as a dangerous city but the hostel is located in a safe neighborhood and it is possible to walk all the way down to the lake in a bit more than an hour. The area is mostly a residential one, so not many bars or restaurants are around, but a big shopping mall is nearby and you can find everything there.

Rooms and Bathrooms

It offers six-bed dorms, on bunks. There is no air conditioning, only fans. Mattresses are very comfy and they look clean. Lockers are available but you need to use your own padlock. The place looks great from the outside and the main gate is always locked for security reasons. Bathrooms are shared with all the other guests and are located in the pool area. Dorms and bathrooms are always clean. Showers don’t have hot water unfortunately, and soap is available but no shampoo.

Common Spaces

The place has a nice entrance with a garden, then a reception with a little lounge area and in the end a fair swimming pool with couches and tables around. It is a great place to relax and have a nice conversation with other guests. It is not a party hostel as the vibe is very quiet, especially in the evening, but it is still possible to talk to other guests as Managua doesn’t seem to have much nightlife so customers usually hang around the pool at night. It is possible to buy cold beers for a fair price.

The hostel is run by the owner, a Canadian guy with a wide knowledge of Nicaragua and usually gives great tips to guests on places to go. A kitchen is available for guests and it is spacious, so more guests can use it at the same time. The hostel offers free pancakes for breakfast.

It is a great place for a night or two in Managua -- it's definitely not a party one but it's still social enough not to be isolated. Many people fly into Managua to start their trip in Nicaragua, and the owner helps a lot in giving advice on where to go during the trip.

Managua Backpackers Inn is the best place to stay in Managua for sure; you really can't go wrong here. It is a great place to stay and from which to explore Managua.

The Location

While it is not located in the heart of the downtown region, the Managua Backpackers Inn is located in one of the safer neighbourhoods of Managua. It is only a four-minute walk from the Metro Centro shopping mall where you will find everything that you may need during your stay in Managua including a supermarket, pharmacy, retail outlets, and immigration services. This hostel is also located close to many of the bus stations that service the towns surrounding Managua such as Leon, Granada, and Masaya.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms here are spacious and they have different types of dormitories depending on your needs, including dorms just for girls and dorms with air conditioning. The beds are comfortable, but some of the sheets can be thin and not fit the bed properly. The bathrooms are clean and spacious also with decent shower heads. The bathrooms are found separate to the rooms.

Common Spaces

There is an abundance of common spaces for hanging out here. There is a living room where you can sit around on the many couches and watch television or movies. They also have the outdoors area, which is equipped with a pool and the Karma Cafe where you can order food and drinks and sit around on the patio furniture. The hostel has a kitchen that is well equipped and clean. In the kitchen you will also find free filtered water for the guests. There is a computer here too for communal use if you do not have a device to access the free Wi-Fi.

They have large, locked gates that are monitored by security allowing for you to feel safe within the confines of the hostel. They also have lockers in the main reception area where you can secure your valuables. The staff are super helpful and friendly and also speak very good English as well as Spanish and they will be able to help you with anything you need, including transport to the airport and to other surrounding towns and attractions.

This place should be called "The Oven"

This place is horrible. The rooms are stifling, no airflow and almost impossible to sleep without waking up in a pool of sweat. The pool has some sort of green slime in it. No way of knowing when it was cleaned last. The water drips out of the shower. They serve breakfast but ran out of coffee and eggs by 10 am. The positives: filtered water. Run, don't walk away from this place.

Best location, very clean, friendly and understanding owners

Stayed there for a month last year in 2007, I promised them that I will post positive reviews on all hostel related websites. Here I found this and here I am. Very nice and overwhelmingly clean swimming pool, great environment, great and very clean kitchen, very clean bathroom. They have maids that work very hard all day and night to keep every bug out of the building, mopping floors every hour, great location, few walking distances to mall, restaurants, and night clubs. Great owners! My first hostel outside country. Internet is available and free, so you don't have to go to internet cafe.
