Managua is not on the typical backpacking trail in Central America and not many hostels are available, but Managua Backpackers Inn is the most famous option and well-known place in the city, as all taxi drivers seem to know it.
The Location
It is conveniently located only ten minutes walking from the bus station, where you can catch catch a bus to Leon or Granada. It is also possible to catch a taxi for a few dollars that only takes five minutes or less. Managua has quiet a reputation as a dangerous city but the hostel is located in a safe neighborhood and it is possible to walk all the way down to the lake in a bit more than an hour. The area is mostly a residential one, so not many bars or restaurants are around, but a big shopping mall is nearby and you can find everything there.
Rooms and Bathrooms
It offers six-bed dorms, on bunks. There is no air conditioning, only fans. Mattresses are very comfy and they look clean. Lockers are available but you need to use your own padlock. The place looks great from the outside and the main gate is always locked for security reasons. Bathrooms are shared with all the other guests and are located in the pool area. Dorms and bathrooms are always clean. Showers don’t have hot water unfortunately, and soap is available but no shampoo.
Common Spaces
The place has a nice entrance with a garden, then a reception with a little lounge area and in the end a fair swimming pool with couches and tables around. It is a great place to relax and have a nice conversation with other guests. It is not a party hostel as the vibe is very quiet, especially in the evening, but it is still possible to talk to other guests as Managua doesn’t seem to have much nightlife so customers usually hang around the pool at night. It is possible to buy cold beers for a fair price.
The hostel is run by the owner, a Canadian guy with a wide knowledge of Nicaragua and usually gives great tips to guests on places to go. A kitchen is available for guests and it is spacious, so more guests can use it at the same time. The hostel offers free pancakes for breakfast.
Summary
It is a great place for a night or two in Managua -- it's definitely not a party one but it's still social enough not to be isolated. Many people fly into Managua to start their trip in Nicaragua, and the owner helps a lot in giving advice on where to go during the trip.

Our hostel is centrally located in the heart of modern downtown Managua. With everything close by and a wide range of accommodation options and features, guests can enjoy a comfortable relaxing home away from home.
In less than 10 minutes you can walk to the Metro Centro Shopping Center, cinemas, parks, casinos, supermarkets, Zone Hippos, and over 50 restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. The surroundings are very clean and secure allowing guests to explore at any time without worry. All of the major national sights, markets, and transportation terminals are just a short walk, bus, or taxi ride away.
We offer dormitory and private rooms that can accommodate up to 8 people per room. There is a shared fully equipped kitchen that guests can use, a large back patio with a swimming pool, air conditioned dormitory and private rooms, free wireless internet, and much more. • We are located one block away from the MetroCentro Shopping Center, just off of Carretera Masaya, on the same street where Chaman Nightclub used to be -taxi drivers will know this location (house #55).
• From the TICA Bus we are a 10 minute taxi ride which costs $2 or 40-50 Cordobas per person.
• The UCA bus can let passengers off directly in front of the hostel or in front of the MetroCentro Shopping Center (and Hotel Intercontinental), from which we are just a five minute walk.
• From the airport we are a 30 minute taxi ride, which will cost between $10-$15 to be negotiated with the driver.
• All other points within Managua to the hostel by taxi usually only cost $2-$3 or 25-60 Cordobas per person unless very far.
