Algeciras is a city on the province of Cadiz, Andalusia. It is the port city and the largest city in the Bay of Gibraltar. The name of Algeciras comes from the Arabic term Al-Jazeera Al-Khadraa or Green Island. Like the rest of Andalusia and Southern Spain, Algeciras was heavily influenced by the conquest and settlement of Arabs in Spain. It was the first city established by the Arab conquerors during their stay in the eighth century. Throughout its history, Algeciras has been conquered and settled by various groups, but it never lost touch of its Moorish flavor.

Because of its favorable position, Algeciras had been settlement since Palaeolithic age. Neanderthal remains have been found in the area. From this time to the pre-Roman tribes of Iberia, to the coming of Phoenicians and Romans, Algeciras has always been a strategic point for commerce and trade. Algeciras was once destroyed by the invading Barbarians but was eventually rebuilt by Moors in the eighth century. Because of its position, Algeciras was also a political target for the various invasions from the kingdoms of Castile and Granada, the Reconquistas, and the reclamation of the Moors. Algeciras was eventually destroyed and abandoned by the order of Granada. In the eighteenth century, Algeciras was reestablished by refugees of the Gibraltar. Algeciras played major roles in various battles and espionage during international wars.

Now, for its location and harbors, Algeciras enjoys being a shipping port and industrialized city. It is one of the busiest ports in the world. Algeciras also enjoys being a tourist destination, popular for its fishing industry, seaside tours, boating and sailing, and whale watching activities.

Within the city districts, vestiges of the ancient and history city of Algeciras are visible through its structures and architectural buildings. They vary from the old industry like furnaces and salt meat factory to the towers and churches.
