The municipality of Silves, Portugal, is located in the south of the country in the Algarve, a very popular summer holiday destination. Compared to the busy coastal towns nearby, Silves is more relaxed. In Silves district, you can find the characteristic nature of the Algarve, including orange trees and oaks. The area is a perfect destination for nature lovers who want to check out the bustling seaside, as well. In fact, the coast is only around twenty-five minutes away -- a perfect day trip if you stay in Silves. Generally, it is very recommendable to rent a car. It gives you the freedom and flexibility to explore of this beautiful region.
The whole area is surrounded by hills. Silves Castle (in Portuguese, Castelo de Silves) is located on the top of a hill in the centre of the town of Silves. The origin of the complex can be traced back to the times when the Roman Empire tried to occupy the area. The large complex is impressive and easy to spot from the centre of the town -- the castle has four towers and overlooks the whole municipality. Archaeological excavations are still going on and a visitor centre is available, too. Silves Cathedral (in Portuguese, Sé de Silves), is another worth-seeing architectural landmark. The style is predominantly Gothic, but you can also see some Baroque influences.
The town in the hinterland has some hotels and guesthouses, but compared to the coastline the supply is a lot less, as the number of tourists is not as high as in the popular beach towns. Most of the accommodations are spread in the centre, while some of them are a bit outside. Usually, the hotels offer three up to four stars. The supply of Silves, Portugal hostels is limited, too, but you will find something suitable if you aim to spend some nice days in the region without spending too much on accommodation. Your Silves, Portugal hostel is located near the river, south of the centre; the facilities are a bit simple, but efficient and clean. In addition to that, Silves, Portugal hostels offer free Wi-Fi as well.
