Sintra is my favourite stop so far! It takes about 2-3 days to visit all the palaces in Sintra so people think staying the night is easier. I however, find it more economical to stay in Lisbon and catch the train daily as it is cheaper than the nightly accomodation charges in Sintra. However the train is 40 min each way so it depends on weather you want to travel that every day. Make sure you visit the Quinta da Regaleira and check out the awesome architecture, secret tunnels and wells. Also be sure to carry your youth and student cards with you for plenty of discounts!
