Tatamka Hostel

The Hostelz.com Review

Tatamka Hostel in Warsaw is a large hostel that has a lot of dorms and private rooms available. They have a lot of free services available, such as laundry, towels, free tea and coffee; breakfast is available for a modest fee.

The Location

The hostel is located just outside the main centre of Warsaw. The hostel is a short walk from a supermarket up the street and about ten minutes from one of the main streets of Nowy Świat, which has plenty of bars and restaurants. Nearby, about seven minutes' walk away, is the metro line M2, which can take you across the city. There is also a rail station about ten minutes' walk away, which has a connection to Warsaw Chopin Airport.

The location is fairly decent, as there are some nice options nearby for eating and drinking, but otherwise there are large residential areas nearby.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel rooms are quite modern and spacious with decent beds. Rooms are also equipped with lockers, which are spacious. Some beds can be quite noisy when moving around, but it isn't a major problem. The rooms are kept tidy and cleaned regularly, so it's never a problem. The bathrooms are fairly clean.

These shared bathrooms have decent warm water most of the time, but the shower is slightly awkward. There are two settings; one is a main shower that is only at around chest height. However, there is a lot of space to move around and shower. The only thing is that the bathroom floor might get wet and can be quite slippery.

Common Spaces

The main common area has sofas and a comfy area for relaxing with TVs. This is area is good to meet people and relax in the evening, however it can get quite messy over the day, as rubbish tends to pile up in the bins, which are only cleaned once a day. The kitchen is well equipped and is decent for preparing food. There are also the free washing machine and dryer, which are great for guests (you must provide your own soap). Breakfast is also served here in the morning for a cheap price. Wi-Fi is quite poor throughout the hostel. It would only work sometimes and there is difficulty connecting, possibly due to it being overloaded by guests.

This hostel provides excellent value for a few nights' stay. It is quite a large hostel, so it doesn't have such a homey feel, but it is modern and the rooms are quite clean. It is a short walk from the major sights and transport for getting around the city.

Disgusting hostel
When I stayed at Tatamka Hostel, I felt uncomfortable and uneased about staying there. At night time when it was time to sleep, two males kept me awake in the 6 bed dormitory all night. I asked the manager if I could change room and they refused to let me move into another dormitory. I found the manager and one of the staff called Monika very rude and ignorant. They never tried to help me in the bad experience I had there and they forced me to stay in the dormitory where I was not allowed to get to sleep. The two males were talking on their phones and leaving the light on all night. I think some people are very inconsiderate and ignorant to other people, especially when it comes to sharing dormitories. My advise to people is try not to share with other people and go in a private twin room, it might be more expensive, but it is guaranteed for you to have a good sleep. In most hostels in Poland people have had their belongings taken from them. When I stayed at Tatamka Hostel I was always nice with the staff, but the staff was never nice back in return.

Building, kitchen are excellent, but sound insulation is absent
Hostel is situated in historical centre of Warsaw. Building, showing rooms, kitchen are freshly painted and excellent. Breakfast and reception are better then middle level in similar hostels. Bedclothes and furniture are quite good for short-term using. Common places are cleaned regularly. But sound insulation is absent and administration do not do anything. You can listen to laughter and humor of youth all night.

Staff are racist
Hostel is nice, with nice facilities. The staff and management is racist. Going to extremes to prevent black/asian that is non-white guests mixing with the other white coloured guests. DO NOT STAY HERE IF YOU ARE NON WHITE.
Tamka Hostel is part of the Dizzy Daisy chain of hostels throughout Poland. It is very easy to get to from the central rail station. Take bus 102, hop off at the first stop on Tamka Road then cross the road and walk back twenty meters. It's within walking distance to the old town and a lot of the major sites as well as restaurants and supermarkets and it's just up the road from the Chopin Museum. The whole building seems to have been recently renovated (on the inside). All the walls are freshly painted with bright colours and the common areas are spaciously set out with new couches, tables, chairs, and kitchenware. The common room itself is a decent size and is divided into two sections by a partition with lounge/TV room on one side and dining area/internet on the other. There is a big vending machine in the reception area with the usual snacks and a stand with cards introducing restaurants, bars, and other Warsaw sights and activities. The hostel is cleaned daily to quite a good standard. Everything is pretty spotless -- apart from the showers, which were still ok. They have free internet, free washing machine usage with drying room (although they charge for washing powder if you don't have any), twenty-four-hour reception, and all the staff are very helpful. Free continental breakfast is also available from 9 a.m. to noon -- cereals, toast with butter, jam, honey, chocolate spread, and cheese. Free tea and coffee are available all day and the kitchen is well stocked for cooking. There seems to be quite a diverse range of people staying there and often the rooms are quite full. The eight-bedroom dorm that we stayed in is comprised of four sets of bunk beds arranged with walking space for one person between them. This makes it a bit cramped, but some of the private rooms have a lot more space, bedside lamps, and no bunks. However none of the rooms have any curtains, which can be a hassle for sleeping in. Overall the hostel is a nice place to stay with a few minor niggles. For the price and location it seems very good value.

I think the toilets and the bathrooms were in excellent condition. They really got their shine on. The kitchen was also ok only that the trash cans were really small and overflowing most of the time. The dormitories are ok and the only irony is that the bedsheets are actually smaller than the mattresses. The lounge is unique with cool furniture and the tv was showing my best news channel, Aljazeera in English. The receptionists were hospitable and i want to specifically point out Michael, i think he was really helpful and the management ought to hold on to him.

This hostel has several issues. One I have been lucky to have not experienced at other hostels. Small round flat redish bugs with legs protruding out the side. Found seven huddled in a locker in my room. A girl in the room found them in her blanket and on her. Found lots of them on the wall. The girl found lots of small ones coming from red speckled spots on the wall. Can't get sheets to fit the beds. An eight man alternate room offered has nine beds in it. That's three bunks and one bed. Two of the bunks have the bed wedged between them. The room just has only walking space between the the other beds. There was not room to open many packs or cases. That room is packed. I like the one kitchen. The trash cans are so small, about eight litters. Trash spills over by late evening.
