Lima House is a delightful hostel for enjoying the city center. The property is very clean, well maintained, and well appointed. It's also a decent price for the area. Overall, the property is very new and everything is in perfect working order. On the other hand, it does lack flair if that's what you're looking for. The guests are typically quiet and respectful and there are very few folks camped out in the hostel during the day. Rather, most guests use the hostel as a home base while they are exploring Lima and it's a perfect hostel for that.
The Location
The hostel is a bit far from the city center proper compared to other downtown hostels but at the same time it's more central to other tourist attractions like the several museums in the immediate vicinity. That's not to say it's an arduous journey to the main attractions in the city center. It's only about a twenty-minute walk.
A note to budget travelers -- there are not a lot of super cheap hostel options in the city center, but there are certainly cheaper options a bit further away in other neighborhoods. Transportation is relatively cheap but a trip from the surrounding areas to the city center will take around thirty minutes and there is a charge (so it's useful to factor this into your price comparison if your goal is to visit the historical center).
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms here are in excellent condition. There are plenty of wall plugs and space to store bags without the room becoming cluttered. The lockers in the rooms are assigned to each bed, so there is no shortage of locker space. Also the lockers are large enough for typical backpacks and have integrated locks with keys, so you don't need to bring your own padlock.
The mattresses are a bit short, so taller visitors will have to fold up bit while sleeping, but the beds are very comfortable otherwise. In terms of noise, the hostel itself is very quiet and the guests are typically not here to party. But sound does travel very easily in the hostel; even noise from the cocktail bar below can be heard with surprising clarity and during party nights it can be quite loud. Ear plugs are recommended for light sleepers just in case.
The shared bathroom space is kept in excellent condition. There are several individual bathroom and shower stalls. There is hand soap at the sinks and paper towels. There is plenty of space for toiletries and clothes in the shower stalls as well as ample hot water and provided soap/shampoo.
Common Spaces
Lima House does lack for relaxing common spaces. There is the dining area, tables and chairs in the open-air courtyard, and a single couch and TV. For the number of guests in the hostel, it's really not much space and none of it is very comfy if you want to lounge around. But overall, it's good enough if you don't plan on spending much time in the hostel and that seems fine for the typical guests here.
On the other hand, the kitchen in the hostel is fantastic. It's very well equipped and everything is clean and in working order. There is also plenty of counter space to prepare meals. The provided breakfast is a serve-yourself affair. It consists of white bread and jam, instant coffee, juice, and bananas. It's not a top-quality breakfast but it's convenient and plentiful.
Summary
Overall, Lima House is a very clean and well-equipped hostel. If the common spaces were just a bit more comfortable and plentiful, this would be a hands-down, perfect hostel. For many guests that are looking to spend most of their time outside of the hostel, it probably is perfect. You can find cheaper options in the area but the quality of the amenities will suffer. So if you're looking for well-maintained, clean lodging but don't want to spend hotel prices, then Lima House can't be beat.
