Backpacker's Family Club is an excellent option for a stay in Lima, especially if you want to explore Miraflores. The hostel is an enormous, old house converted into a bright and vibrant hostel. There's absolutely no need to worry about space here -- even the eight room dorms have plenty of room and all the common spaces are spacious and brightly colored. The first whirl around the hostel is a quite an adventure; you're discovering more and more rooms.
The Location
Family Club is right in the heart of Miraflores and just a short walk to the parks along the shore or Parque Kennedy. It's also an easy walk to visit Huaca Pucllana, the impressive pre-Incan ruins within the city. To visit other parts of town, it's necessary to grab a bus or taxi. Lima is a sprawling and large city without centralized tourist areas, so no matter where you stay, you'll be taking some transit if you want to see all the sights. The metro bus terminal is about fifteen minutes away on foot.
The "front" door is actually on Calle Berlin. Just ring the bell on the only door you can access. It takes some searching to figure that out but the building itself is quite easy to spot, despite the lack of a sign. It's a huge bright pink building with bright artwork and a foosball table in the lawn. There aren't many other buildings in the immediate vicinity that you would mistake for the hostel.
There are plenty of dining opportunities in the area though they are on the spendy side for Lima. There is a supermarket a short walk away, but it is quite expensive. For the cheapest eats, Mercado Surquillo near the metrobus stop is the best bet.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are several dorm rooms available, and even the eight-bed dorm rooms are airy and spacious. On top of that, the rooms are impressively coordinated -- the bed sheets even match the stool in the room. The bunk beds feature glorious and delightful foam mattresses. And the neighborhood itself is very quiet at night, so you will definitely sleep well here.
The bathrooms aren't attached to the rooms, but there are several so it's rare to wait around. The water is hot and there is plenty of water pressure. There are also sufficient places to hang things in the bathrooms. Hand soap is provided in the bathrooms, as are towels.
Common Spaces
Again, Family Club shines in the common spaces department. There are two terraces, a front lawn with porch, TV room, dining room, courtyard, kitchen, and sitting room. Plenty of options to move around and find something to your liking if you want to hang out. The kitchen is small but sufficient for simple meals. Everything is kept clean, but it is a bit lacking for cooking implements (you can get by with what they have if you're flexible). The included breakfast is great -- it's simple but of good quality and they brew good strong coffee here!
Security is good and the neighborhood is quite safe in general. To enter the building you'll have to ring the bell every time. The staff are snappy about answering the door. The regulations list a curfew of midnight, but there are certainly guests coming back without issue much later into the night. There are also metal lockers provided within the room for security within the building.
Wi-Fi has trouble reaching some of the rooms -- especially upstairs -- but you'll get a good connection in the common areas without any trouble.
Summary
This is definitely a great place to camp out for awhile while visiting Lima. It's a great location for exploring the Miraflores neighborhood and just a beautiful comfortable space overall. There is a surprising amount of effort and coordination that has gone into decorating the place -- it's eclectic like you would expect from your typical hostel, but it has much more focus than you usually find. It's definitely the type of hostel where you'll want to extend your stay.
