Patagonia House is a pleasant hostel within walking distance of Punta Arenas town centre. It provides basic rooms and a communal kitchen. There is nothing fancy about this hostel, but it has a cozy atmosphere and the communal kitchen is a good space for meeting other travelers. The owner is very friendly and goes the extra mile to get to know guests and give advice.
The Location
Patagonia House is located on a quiet, safe-feeling street around ten minutes’ walk from central Punta Arenas. Supermarkets, shops, bus terminals, and the central square are all within fifteen minutes’ walk. If arriving by plane, there is a transfer service which will bring you to the central square of Punta Arenas, from where you can walk to the hostel (sometimes the transfer will even drop you at the hostel door).
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are a range of dorms and private rooms of varying sizes. The hostel staff members don’t seem to care much about which exact dorm you booked -- we ended up in a four-bed dorm despite paying for the fifteen-bed! Luckily, we never heard of anyone being put in a larger dorm than they’d paid for. The rooms are a bit dated but are cozy and have comfortable bunkbeds, clean sheets, secure lockers, and good Wi-Fi signal.
There are just two bathrooms, so there is often a wait for the shower. The showers produce hot water although the water pressure is a little low. Bathrooms are clean but basic; toilet paper is provided but not soap.
Common Spaces
There is one large, open-plan common space that houses the reception, communal kitchen, dining tables, sofas, and two computers for guest use. There isn’t much atmosphere, but having just the one common area means there are plenty of opportunities to meet the other guests at the hostel. The kitchen is of a decent size and there is free tea and coffee available. The decor is a little dated, but an effort has been made to put some art around and overall the hostel has a pleasant, cozy atmosphere.
Summary
Patagonia House is a cozy and convenient place to spend a few days. Whilst the lack of bathrooms is annoying, the other facilities are good, with a large kitchen and decent Wi-Fi. Don’t expect much atmosphere, but there are plenty of opportunities to chat to other travelers in the common areas and the owner is friendly and welcoming.
