Why Not Backpackers Reviews

Calypso Inn Backpackers Resort is a pretty large hostel. The Wi-Fi signal is quite good and pretty fast. There is a work and stay desk for anyone who wants. There are a number of computers in the lobby space. The breakfast (which costs extra) consists of toast, cereal, coffee, and tea.

The Location

This hostel is in a nice area in town about ten-minutes' drive from the bus station. It is a very very long walk into downtown at about twenty minutes. There is a shuttle that goes to town on a schedule as well as a free airport shuttle which needs to be booked in advance. It is close to a couple of bars and restaurants. There is a small grocery store a couple blocks away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms are pretty standard with comfortable mattresses and bedding. The private rooms are pretty small but will do. There is little space in either for bags. There are single toilet rooms with sinks and separate shower rooms near the rooms. There is also a set of colorful public washrooms near the dining space. It's pretty clean and well maintained for a hostel.

Common Spaces

The kitchen is clean, well stocked, and well organized. It is small so cooking outside prime times is recommended. There are two large fridges which have plenty of space for everyone. The is a huge open lounge and dining area with bar tables, extra-large picnic tables, sofas, and a pool table. The hostel is pretty large, with lots of breakout seating areas around the grounds, including the lobby, the dining, the pool, and the lounge. The hammocks next to the pool are pretty nice. There is a bar right next to the open kitchen, which serves drinks for parties at night and the dining space turns into a semi-dance area. There was also a night where they brought in reptiles and everyone got to hold a snake or lizard or two. There is a tour desk located in the lobby space so they can help you arrange a dive tour.

Summary

This is a pretty decent hostel overall. It's a party hostel if you want but if that is not your thing, the rooms are far enough away to be quiet enough for an early night. The staff are nice and very helpful.

The front entry seating, tour sales and computer area. The front of the Calypso from the street. Breakfast space. Reception. The lounge space with the bar, kitchen and dining area. It turns into a dance space when arranged. The pool table and night games. The view to the rooms. The 2 storey on the left has private rooms and 2 toilets and 2 showers. Pool with seating and a few hammocks. Public washrooms. Private bedroom.

LOVED IT!!

Great staff, cheap meals and something happening in the bar every night.

Bloody excellent!

stayed at Calypso Backpackers for more than 2 weeks. really enjoyed my stay and i didn't want to leave. they've got a kitchen and a bar and the atmosphere is great! you hang out, have dinner and a couple of drinks and just enjoy. it's a 15min walk to town but there are buses to town almost every hour, free of charge! all staff members are so cool and help whenever they can! we booked a lot of tours with tour guru vee at reception, she helped us a lot with deciding what to do. i would highly recommend this hostel!!

All right

This hostel was all right, the only thing is that it's a bit expensive, and they have a bar and so no bring your own.

Friendliest hostel we stayed in!

We stayed here for a week in July 2008. It was excellent. We arrived off the Greyhound bus at 1 a.m., so they said they couldn't pick us up, but if we got a cab they would refund us the full amount. And they did! From the word go they were friendly, the staff always trying to remember you by name, and going out of their way to help us. They always gave us their personal opinion on tours, having been on them themselves, never just gave us a leaflet. Excellent internet access, eight to ten computers available until 10 p.m. on the Global Gossip network. Fifteen-minute walk into the CBD, but buses run for free from the hostel every hour. Friendly atmosphere, cheap and quality food from the morning till late at night from the on site bar. Lots of things to do in the evenings, something happening most nights, from pub quizzes to pool competitions. Well recommended.

Friendly, clean, simply the best!

Stayed with them for a week in June '08. Their staff were very friendly, always trying their best to help guests, going beyond what is required most of the time. The bar and swimming pools backpackers in the night -- a remarkable water hole for you to get to know each other. Other than that, the dorms are very clean and there's surely no lack of toilets! We weren't bothered by the distance from CBD because we spent most of the day out and only returned in the night. Otherwise, a walk back doesn't take more than twenty-five minutes too. The good thing about this place is that cheap eateries line across the block. Much much cheaper than the food at CBD area. Plus plus point for a quick bite or even lunch!

Great

stayed five nights there and was really impressed, friendly helpful staff, good meals, cheap drinks (although not a big choice of beer) and good parties, and the pub next door is good to chill out in. had a great stay, only downfall is the beds are a bit hard. oh well, awesome place.

We loved this hostel we came back and stayed again for a week .

The beds are comfortable and rooms are of a good size! The bathroom facilities are cleaned twice a day and always nice! The showers are good with running hot water.

The kitchen and bar is all open planned . There is a burger restaurant on site and a bar serving alcohol.

The staff are always friendly and make check in so easy.

I want to say thankyou to Will & Sarah for being so friendly & helpful too!

Liked: Great and amazing staff!! Extremely helpful and nice!! The free shuttle to the airport and to town is great as well!! Didn't like: Definitely needs and update. The buildings are old and some of the wood is rotting. Paint coming off and tiles broken. Also, showers in our area were broken the whole time we were there, and the showers across the way we had to use only had hot water 50% of the time.

Liked: Nice bar area and pool. Staff were all great. Toilets and showers where all clean which is most important. Didn't like: Bit far from centre but the bus mitigated that. Very limited parking inside the compound.

The character and atmosphere is perfect for a stay in Cairns. The people were wonderfully helpful and the facilities are well presented. You can have privacy and full access to the city, a party and a quiet night if you need.

Liked: Free wifi! And not gigs of wifi but endless hours of it. I could actually FaceTime home and have a good connection without worrying about running out of data in the middle of it. Vic, who was at the front desk a lot of the time, was really helpful and nice. She booked our greyhound package and spent a good part of the day looking for the best deals for us while we were out. The rooms are far enough away from the dining area and kitchen that it's not too loud at night when the music is playing. Although they are a far ways walk from town, they have courtesy buses every hour, as well as ones to the marina in the morning for your reef trips. Didn't like: The kitchen was small and a bit dirty at times but cleaned every night.

Not in the town center, but regular bus to town (and really not that far to walk). Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere! Free airport shuttle and free wifi in common areas! They offer a reasonable breakfast (basic but just what you need when you are on a tight budget)
