Porto Downtown Hostel

The Hostelz.com Review

Porto Downtown Hostel is a delightful hostel with friendly staff and free breakfast.

The Location

It's in an excellent location, walking distance to many attractions in Porto. For "Harry Potter" fans, it's a short walk to Livraria Lello Bookshop, where JK Rowling wrote much of the story. A few more steps will take you to the Luis I Bridge, otherwise known as the Eiffel Bridge, and there are many churches for you to peruse. A real bonus of the hostel is that it's above a convenience store, meaning you don't have to go far to buy most things you might need for your stay.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are clean and have bed linen already set out when you arrive. There are lockers in the rooms as well to keep your valuables safe, with latches that allow you to use a small padlock. There is a balcony in our room that looks out to the street, shops, and restaurants below. Our one issue is that the mattress used has sunk slightly in the middle. The bathrooms are next to the bedrooms and are basic, but offer all that you'll need.

Common Spaces

It is a stylish hostel, with a bright, big kitchen/dining area with a large TV and many trendy pictures on the walls. Top marks for the kitchen, because it's an essential feature in a hostel, allowing you to cook your own meals. There's a large fridge too in which to keep your food. They also offer free tea and coffee (no milk though). They offer two choices of breakfast -- a basic one of a croissant and coffee that you must get from a cafe close by (although finding it proves more difficult than it should be!). The other choice is a bigger breakfast from the same cafe for an additional fee.

They offer a cupboard next to reception where you can keep your luggage. This is really useful if you need to leave your luggage that doesn't fit in the bedroom lockers, or if you do not have a padlock. They are kind enough to let you leave it there for the day, even after you have checked out.

This is an impressive hostel with all of the necessities you need to have a comfortable stay at a superb location in Porto. With the free breakfast and kitchen facilities available for such a low price, it has everything you need for a cheap stay in Porto.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews

The Porto Downtown Hostel is easy to find and conveniently located in the middle of the old town center and within walking distance from the Sao Bento train station. The reception area has lots of informative brochures and maps about the city and the service-oriented staff takes a personal interest in each guest, to the point of remembering names. During our stay, one receptionist went out of her way to draw up a list of vegetarian restaurants, complete with street addresses. Rooms and Bathrooms The dorm rooms are spacious with high ceilings and lots of extra floor space. They are equipped with metallic bunk beds and metal lockers for your belongings. Our room had French windows overlooking a street that seems to attract late-night partiers, so it can be a little noisy in the summer. And regardless of whether the window is open, it is difficult to get a good night's sleep here because of the way the lighting system is set up. The dorm rooms have a transom (window) over the door, and the light in the foyer just outside the door is on a motion sensor, so that anytime someone gets up to go to the bathroom or otherwise comes or goes from the room, this bright light floods the entire dorm room. A sleeping mask, therefore, and possibly earplugs, are highly recommended when staying here. The bathrooms are outside the dorm rooms and are clean and well functioning, if a little cramped. Common Spaces One of the best features of the hostel is its common area. The spacious kitchen, where the free breakfast is laid out, has a bar-like counter that doubles as a table with high stools, and guests can be found here at all hours, using their laptops to access the free Wi-Fi. Just beyond the kitchen is the lounge area with comfy sofas, bean bags, and a large TV with a DVD player. Guests tend to congregate here especially in the mornings and evenings, and the hostel tends to attract a very social crowd. Summary In spite of the light and noise problems, a stay at the Porto Downtown Hostel can be quite enjoyable. We would consider staying here again if they get the light situation sorted out.

Your new fresh and friendly home
I stayed here with a couple of friends last summer and we had an awesome time. The rooms are excellent, i never stayed in such spacey rooms, the staff is really friendly, and the location is fantastic. The common room/kitchen is great, especially the couch. We met a lot of nice people here, including the staff.
