Absolutely Awful! Do not stay here!
Probably the worst place i have ever stayed anywhere in the world. There are prostitutes, tramps, and druggies outside. And all night you can hear them outside. The rooms had awful blinds on the windows, so you couldn't get a decent nights sleep. The beds were plastic and close together, whilst the TV didn't work and the chairs were falling apart. Only one hob in the kitchen worked, and there was a strange old lady constantly pestering everyone. Worst of all was the owner, who was insulting, patronising, and dismissive. Just an absolutely awful experience, do not stay here.

Oh My God!
This place was a real eye opener, the street outside was strewn with vulnerable people, drug abusers, transsexual prostitutes, and pimps. worse still the man who lived and worked in the hostel would bring some of the prostitutes into the hostel. when we stayed here he had a huge fight with one prostitute. she was smashing his room up and threatening to stab him because he wouldn't pay her the 5 bucks they'd agreed! I was terrified! The staff were pretty rude too -- at night if you were in the outside area you were told to "shut the f*#k up!" we are backpackers and don't expect the Ritz but we are paying to live in the hole so we should be treated with some respect. I was terrified the whole time -- it was heartbreaking.

this is the worst place i have stayed on the east coast. we arrived and a prostitute and her pimp approached us straight away. we then knocked on the door and the owner opened it a tiny crack and asked what we wanted. the front hall was really dirty with chewing gum and just loads of crap on the floor. then we went to our dorm. it stank of fish/curry and the one window had no curtain. it had bars on it and the street light shone directly into the room. all we could hear all night was prostitutes clip clopping in their high heels and cars coming to pick them up. a couple had a loud argument and kept bursting in and out all night so nobody really got any sleep, then we all had to hear the couple have sex in the eight-bed dorm. it was ridiculously hot in there as well with just one fan pointing at the noisy couples bed. no one was going to ask them to share it! the next day we left, when we told the owner he said this happens a lot. dont stay at sydney gday backpackers, it's the worst place ever. oh yeah, and theres only three bathrooms on the ground floor to share between four dorms. and they were also disgusting.

This one is a bit of a party haven for backpackers. I was kept up late every night during my stay because of all the noise from the late night drinking binges and loud chit chat. There really aren't enough bathrooms when the hostel is full. People waited outside while I showered and vice versa. (I stayed for Mardi Gras weekend 2007). I would've given it one star but the place was kept pretty clean by the hard working cleaning staff so kudos to them. Don't stay here unless you don't mind sleepless nights!

Currently staying at the hostel and loving it. Its small, friendly, and welcoming. he staff are great and the rooms of a good standard. Kitchen and bathrooms are very adequate. A good place to stay long term if you can't face missing out on the social scene if you got a unit. There are few long term residents who are saving for more travels. It's a couple of minutes to kings cross. Ten from oxford street and fifteen from the centre. Try Harry's pies near finger wharf they're a bit of an institution and great drunken munchies. Its near the action but not too close, it helps to be able to sleep sometimes. Overall a good budget choice that is postioned close to the major sights and evening entertainment.

We stayed at forbes for three months while we were working in Sydney in 2005 and came back again for xmas and new year for another month and had some of our best times in Oz. We met some great people and lots of people return to forbes as its like a family. The rooms are okay, everyone gets there own telly in the rooms. A few people stay long term so we made some great friends. The shower rooms aren't modern but always clean. The rent is really cheap so you get what you pay for. You can use the internet downstairs for free. Loads of people sit out in the courtroom and play cards and drink. Never had any problems with security. Kings cross is a lively area and there are trannies outside at night but they never bothered us or anyone else that we knew. A wicked location, one min from kings cross station/bars/clubs/supermarket and ten-minute walk from the CBD, you just have to ignore the freaks in the area. The only down sides were the kitchen, it could do with a makeover and the amount of time people hogged the bathroom when you had to get up for work. Although this is one of the friendiest places to stay in Oz. Clive, who works in reception is more than helpful and is really lovely. He will try and help you out whenever he can. If there are any spiders in your room, then Clives your man. Whan, who cleans the room is also friendly. We still stay in touch and can't wait to go back.

The worst hostel I've ever been to. The landlord refused to pay out my "free" transport from the airport because I only claimed 1 day after I had checked in and not immediately after I had arrived. You couldn't have a normal discussion with him because he would get insulting. The rooms were also a little shabby/smelly and if you have a problem with prostitutes or drug victims outside it's a no go anyway. Therefore: Look for something else. You can do way better for less than 20 Dollars a night!

My Friends and i stayed here for 2 weeks and the time we had was great - the accomodation was quite close to the city, close to a supermarket and train station. Altough atnight we experienced something very different-a view of prostitutes, drug dealers, drug users - you name it! Apart from that (and the mass of insects and cockroaches) we had a great time.

I stayed at Forbes Terrace for about 2 months in 2003/04 and loved this place! The rooms were clean, the staff were friendly and you always met great people there. And it's one of the cheapest hostels in Sydney. I'm sorry that Sam's gone, he was great fun!!!

A friend and I stayed here for a week. Personally I don't think we could find a better hostel. The staff are very, very friendly and are always offering their help. The place is clean and the guests are definitely worth the chat. The location is a bit rough so watch for the transvestites because they do get feisty. But it's only a 10-minute walk into the city. I definitely recommend Forbes to anyone.

I stayed there in 1993. Then it was perfect, clean and I had a lot of fun. Therefore I came back with my family in 2003 and it still was a lot of fun to stay there. Nothing but compliments.

I stayed in this hostel for five days. I booked it on the Internet as a double, but when we arrived we had a six-man room (three bunk beds). Unfortunately, our room was on the ground floor, right outside where the transvestites used to "pull" clients at all hours of the morning. We awoke one morning to find a couple of druggy's needles lying outside our window. The hostel is clean but on numerous occasions we had to clean up the crap that people leave after supper or breakfast. Hey, we all do it. The rate for the "double" was $66 per night. A reasonable hostel.

The room I stayed in was spacious with comfortable beds. The whole place was clean and had a nice outside area. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It was much better than most of the places I have stayed at in Sydney and it's one of the cheapest.

The views from the rooms are great. For example, outside my window every night were four transsexual prostitutes; hours of fun, those 'girls.' There was a man at the end of the corridor who used to piss in his sink, his room stank, and he left the door open. Management refused to ask him to leave. Stay here at your own risk!
