Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Sweden

Wherever you are in the southernmost part of Sweden, you will not have too many problems finding hostels and accommodation. The three main cities where you will find a lot of hostels are Stockholm, Gothenburg and Uppsala. Otherwise there are hostels scattered all over the place with one or two in many of the different towns along the way.

Stockholm is the capital city and you will want to spend a good couple of days here. They do incredible free walking tours around the city which are highly recommended by most hostels so ask your reception on where to go. They will give you a very detailed history into Stockholm, royalty, scandal, bloodbaths and of course, the history behind the term Stockholm Syndrome. It is also recommended to go visit the Vasamuseet. Voted as one of the best museums in the world, it isn't hard to see why when you walk into the museum and are met with an original viking ship dredged up from the bottom of the ocean where it sank 20 minutes into its maiden voyage. Take a trip to Gamla Stan, the old town and take a stroll down the cobbled streets. Follow it up with a night out too. Stockholm's nightlife is quite a fun scene. There are an abundance of hostels in this city so do your research about what area you want to stay in before you arrive.

Uppsala is the big university town and as such can be quite fun place to visit. There are some stunning palaces and cathedrals to visit around the town. It also has quite a nice café and food scene as well. It is worth spending a day or so here to explore and you can ask at your Uppsala hostel about specific places that are good to and get some food and drink.

Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden and is a great place to spend the weekend. Hostels can often be booked out so make sure you have somewhere to stay before you arrive by booking your hostel in advance. There are plenty of parks to explore and some beautiful architecture. If you have some extra time head on down to the archipelago for the day as it is home to some spectacular scenery. All of the cities put on their best fronts during the summer months when there is a stack of extra daylight and plenty to explore. In the winter months, it is well worth heading to northern Sweden to explore, just make sure that you rug up, because it gets very cold!

One of the best trips you will have in Sweden is heading up into the Arctic Circle and experience the northern lights in some of the most amazing scenery ever. One of the best places to see the Northern Lights in the world is in the Abisko National Park as the night sky is clear on most nights. You can fly into Kiruna from here and take the train over. Kiruna is also famous for the Ice Hotel they build there every winter. While it is quite expensive to stay in the ice hotel, you can stay in a hostel and go for a wander around the outside of the ice hotel and explore some of the more common areas. Both of these places are home to only a couple of hostels each and they can be quite popular so make sure you book a couple of months in advance to get the most amazing experience northern Sweden has to offer.
