Uppland is a historical province on the eastern coast of Sweden. It is surrounded by the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Bothnia in the East and by other traditional provinces in the South, East and North. Uppland is generally a flat terrain all over except in the South, where it is features wooded elevations, islands and deep bays. The northern part is filled with green, leafy forests and bogs. The Carl von Linné´s Botanical Garden is a place you must definitely visit in Uppland. It is home to over 1,300 different kinds of herbs and flowers. The exquisite mix of colors and fragrances is a heavenly experience indeed! The brick house in the garden is a museum now. The garden is open for visitors during summer. The town of Älvkarleby has the river Dalälven’s three tributaries merge as one mighty waterfall, and is also home to the region's fishing center. You can fish for salmon, pike and bass here. Most of the youth hostels in Älvkarleby are situated on the waterfront.
While on your visit here, stop off and visit the 16th century Uppsala Castle. The site is famed in history for the overthrow of the Church in favor of monarchy. The Uppsala Cathedral is a magnificent structure with its glorious spires reaching 118.7 meters into the sky. Designed in French Gothic style, this cathedral with its chapels, stained glass windows, treasury and artifacts is a sight that should not be missed. While you are here, stop over at Old Uppsala which is 5 kilometers north of Uppsala. It contains royal mounds on a ridge that house graves of the kings. An exhibition is held there to provide more historical information about the royals.
The Kvekgården farm is one of Uppland's wonders as it is one of the few older farms that are preserved in their original location. It dates back to the 18th century and houses a farmhouse and stables. You can also visit Carolina Rediviva which is the oldest university library of Sweden. Many hostels in Uppland offer easy access and transportation to numerous interesting spots and historic places in the region.
