Get to know Milford Sound (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Milford Sound.

Milford Sound is one of the highlights for every visitor of the South Island of New Zealand -- it's one of the most amazing fiords in the world -- and is located southwest in the island, just on the top of Fiordland. This is one of the best spots in New Zealand, and the one that you can't miss! Here you'll find big, glaciated mountains with snow on their peaks, creating an amazing rush of waterfalls through the fiords, hundreds of metres just before finding the sea -- the same sea that houses dolphins, seals, and penguins playing all day long just in front of you. Obviously, a place like this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You may find all the boats very touristic and the place very crowded, but the cruise on the fiord is a must-see! It is worth every cent and it's actually not that expensive if you buy your ticket in the harbour. You can choose the one that best suits you, from luxury vessels to small boats, from forty-five minutes to an overnight -- you can choose. For having good quality with a cheap price, we suggest you to be in the earlier boats -- that have fewer people -- and to take the cruise that makes the one hour and a half tour. If you like nature walks, Milford Track is opened to tourists and it takes you through the most amazing scenario, usually on a three-day walk.

To get to Milford Sound, you can choose to arrive by plane, road, or on foot (from Te Anau). But anyway, you must know that driving the Milford Road can provide you some of the most astonishing you'll ever see.

You'll have just a few hostels in Milford to choose from -- they are filled with people doing the Milford Track and can provide you with a lot of useful information. Because of the many days with rain in this area, allow yourself some flexibility -- sometimes it's possible to get three days in a row with too much fog and rain and you don't want to leave without seeing the fiords.
