Born Free Hostel Reviews

Description

We are a budget accommodation in the more quiet side of old Bangkok called Samsen/Kao San.
We are situated in an old Thai/Chinese styled building with interesting architectural features but the dorms and lobby area were redecorated and designed by a Thai and Swiss couple with the sole idea to allow backpackers to relax during their stay in Bangkok.

If travel information is needed, we also run a travel agency called Born Free Travel, so guests may inquire or book transportation and accommodation in Thailand directly on sight.

..............

Conditions:
We want you to have fun when you stay with us so we don't really want to have too many rules. But as travelers you will understand that we have to be realistic so here we go :

1.Born Free Hostel has a 48hour (2days) cancellation policy. Guests will be charged the full amount of their stay if their reservation is not cancelled 48h prior to check in time at midday. If you wish to cancel any reservations please send us an email with all details. Groups of 4 or more need to cancel at least 7 days in advance.

2.This is a backpacker's/travelers's destination so it is not suitable for children and babies.

3.Born Free Hostel stands for a relaxed atmosphere where travelers can meet and share journeys. We have a few simple house rules and when these are respected everyone will be able to enjoy their time here:

1)For safety reasons we do not allow guests' friends in to the room areas without staff being present. Any guests who wish to bring in friends may do so in the lobby area only.

2)Alcohol, smoking and food (with certain exceptions) is not tolerated within the bed room areas. Bed rooms are a retreat to relax, sleep, enjoy downtime etc.. and not to party!

3)We do not have a curfew hour but we want everyone to have fun, enjoy the movie screen or play games but those relaxing in the rooms need to be respected.

:)

Also please note:
The Born Free family just grew. We now have two Persian kittens guarding the house!!!
Accommodation Information
We are in an old Thai / Chinese building - which means our newly refurbished accommodation has a lot of interesting features.

We set out to provide a high standard of accommodation. Every bed has its own reading lights and electric socket so you have no trouble charging your smartphone and computer.

At the moment we have a 12 bed air conditioned dorm and a 10 bed fan cooled dorm.
(the fan room is not advertised on hostelbookers, please contact us for more details or visit Hostelz.com).
Please note that there are discount prices for guests staying more than 1 night, please contact us for more information...

Downstairs is a smooth lounge and a kitchen for those who want to self-cater. But there are so many places to eat cheaply around us you really don't need to think of using the kitchen!

Location Information:
Born Free Hostel has a unique location. When you get here you will find that we're in a unique part of Bangkok which is royal land and because of this there a strict limits which prevent our 'village' from changing too much. You'll see traditional chinese / thai families living and making a living in all the streets around us:

Born Free Hostel is located two blocks away from the Krung Kasem canal which joins with the Maha Nak canal below the Golden Mountain. It gives those who seek a little walking adventure through authentic Thai neighborhoods a perfect insight of untouched Thai relaxed lifestyle within the local communities. You will be able to experience the real friendliness of the locals which so often is overshadowed by tourist scams and businesses giving many the wrong impression of true Thailand. Once at the Golden Mountain, you may also take a canal boat on an exciting journey through the centre of Bangkok...the possibilities to explore around here are limitless!

We are on Samsen Soi 6, house nr. 3 opposite of Preeya Thai Massage and next to Samsen 6 Guesthouse. We have two 7Elevens nearby, plenty of street food vendors, small pubs and bars along the canals and alleys of Samsen as well as restaurants.

Nearest practical bus station is right across the road with buses to Hua Lamphong train station, MBK and National Stadium, Chatuchak weekend market etc. as well as pier 13 with shuttle boats down the Chao Phraya river.

The standing Buddha, Rama 8 bridge and Dusit Zoo are all in walking distance...
10min walk from our location is the famous nightlife of Kao San Road and a little further is the Grand Palace and Wat Po (reclining Buddha) making this a perfect location for starting day tours in any direction...

Location and Contact

Location

• From the international airport: You may take a taxi towards Kao San area or Banglampoo. Samsen is a very famous road so most taxi drivers will know where it is. The normal fare from the airport to the city is about 350 - 450THB/taxi and this should include your highway toll fees (~70THB).
• The airport express train may be a cheaper option at 15- 45THB/pers and the exit station is Phaya Thai from which you will have to take a taxi for 60-70THB/taxi or an ongoing Skytrain to Siam square and then buses 47 or 15 into this area (the 47 bus stop is under the National Stadium BTS station going away from Siam). The bus fare is 7THB/pers and exit station will be on Ratchadamnoen rd. (past democracy monument) next to Kao San rd.
• If there is heavy traffic we advise you walk to the canal next to Jim Thompson's Museum (5min walk from National Stadium, just ask a local) and take the canal boat to Golden Mountain (Ratchadamnoen rd. past democracy monument) and then walk from there...
• From the domestic airport Don Mueang: You may take bus 59 to Mo Chit and then buses 3 or 524 to Samsen Road. A taxi should run at around 300THB on a meter including the highway tolls.
• You could take a train into Hua Lamphong train station and then bus 53 to Samsen but this will take much longer!
• From southern bus terminal: Take bus 516, 524, 30 towards Ratchadamnoen rd next to Kao San rd.
• From northern bus terminal: Take bus 3, 524 or 9 towards Samsen rd. and Phra Sumen area.
• From eastern bus terminal: Take the skytrain to National Stadium and/or Siam square and take buses 47 or 15 to Ratchadamnoen rd. or take bus 2 all the way to Ratchadamnoen rd. (past democracy monument)
• By boat: Coming from Sathorn Taksin bridge take taxi boat exit N13/Phra Athit. Fares are usually around 15THB/ride/pers. ***This is a very good alternative to avoid road traffic and rush hours/street events.***
• Directions when walking from Kao San Rd. starting at the Police Station:
• Take Chakrapong road and walk towards Phra Sumen road until you hit a traffic light. You will pass Universe INN on your left and two smaller Sois on your right. Cross the traffic light/junction and pass the small bridge over the Phadung Krung Kasem canal. After this you are on Samsen road. From here it is another few minutes to Soi 6 on your right hand side. We are house number 3 about 20 metres from the main street.
• Please be aware of tuk tuk scams (20THB tuktuk rides) or expensive taxis from airports or stations stating there is traffic, holidays etc. Bangkok always has traffic and they have to by law turn on their meter! Tuk tuks do not run on meters but they will try and drop you off at overpriced shops to get their commissions...
• ***We have included a picture with our map and address written in Thai in the gallery. Please download it and show to your taxi driver on arrival!***
• Last but not least, travel safe and responsibly :D
