Simon’s Town has long been a favourite on Cape Point itineraries. Whilst many rush through Cape Point in a quick day trip from Cape Town, to really appreciate the beauty of this peninsula, a few days is a must. And quite frankly, there’s no better place than Simon’s Town. Given that the Cape Town train-line extends here and most Simon’s Town hostels are within walking distance to the station, there really is no excuse!
Simon’s Town is like a step back in South Africa’s history, with the perfect architectural mix of Cape Dutch houses and Old English terraces. The best way to enjoy this aspect of the town is to simply walk the streets, stopping in the quaint coffees and contemporary galleries. Make sure to ask your Simon’s Town hostel for the latest local favourite or exhibition in town.
Simon’s Town serves as an easy base to explore other areas of the Cape Point peninsula. A must-see is the penguins of Boulder’s Beach. Here, you are able to get up close and personal with the cutest penguins in town. For those willing to brave the cold of the ocean, you can have the chance to swim with them. Your Simon’s Town hostel will point you in Boulder’s Beach direction, but it really shouldn’t be too far at all!
Next up is the wild Muizenberg beach, with its world-class surf and colorful beach houses. Some surf schools in Simon’s Town will be able to arrange surfing excursions to Muizenberg -- make sure to check this with your Simon’s Town hostel. However, before going out to surf, do make sure to check with local authorities regarding shark sightings in the region.
For the more adventurous travelers, Simon’s Town also affords the chance to undertake "shark cage dives." Here, you will get the chance to come face-to-face with great white sharks, from the safe confines of an iron cage. Whilst this is not for the faint-hearted, no trip to Simon’s Town would be complete without some adventure! Most Simon’s Town hostels will be able to arrange cage dives at competitive rates.
Speak to your Simon’s Town hostel about further travel in the Cape Point peninsula -- they will surely be able to offer assistance and advice about where to go. Simon’s Town dorms are usually available throughout the year. However, if you’re traveling during South African holidays and the summer months, we recommend that you book in advance.
