The Whanganui National Park is just outside of Wanganui town center and you can take a trip there to engage in white-water rafting and other outdoors activities on the Wanganui River or in and around the national park. Hostels in Wanganui are mostly in the city center. You will find all of the amenities that you may need within a major city such as banks and supermarkets. Ask at your hostel for the closest ones to your location. There are other Wanganui hostels that are a little further out and you are advised to have a car if you are visiting one of these hostels, as getting from town to town in New Zealand can be difficult with poor transport between towns.
