42b College House Backpackers is a family-owned hostel in Wanganui. This former school hostel building has now been turned into a backpackers by the German owners.
42b College House Backpackers is located in a residential neighborhood of Wanganui, close to the city center. The main street with supermarkets, shops, and restaurants is within walking distance, as are some parks and the river. The beach is a bit further and youll need some form of transport to get there. There are several off-street parking spots available. The hostel is easy to find and has a few signs outside on the building.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are both private rooms and dorm rooms available. The big dorm has nine beds and there are also some smaller dorms. The rooms are spacious and have a combination of bunk beds and single beds. Every bed has a small table and chair next to it, which is a great place to put some of your stuff. The beds are made up with clean linen and they are quite comfortable. In summer, the rooms get hot and there are a lot of flies everywhere.
There are a few shared bathrooms. When we visited, the toilets were clean, but the showers were not. The showers are ok; they have warm water, and enough hooks for clothes, but no shelf for shampoo.
42b College House Backpackers has a big kitchen, dining room, garden, and a TV room. The kitchen has some industrial equipment (leftover from when this was a school hostel) and lots of kitchen equipment. Everything is clean and there is enough space. There are free spices available. The dining room has a book exchange, some board and card games, and table tennis. The room is big, but not very cozy, so its not used a lot. The TV room has comfy couches and is a much better place to hang out than the dining room. There are DVDs available and there is a piano. The pool table is probably the worst pool table in the Southern Hemisphere, but its free to play. There is a big garden, which is lovely. It has enough places to sit or sunbathe. There are some animals around, which are cute during the day, but they make a lot of noise early in the morning.
Laundry is available against a fee. The hostel offers free Wi-Fi, but it is so slow that it is almost more frustrating than not having any Wi-Fi at all. The whole building is a bit rundown and there is still a lot of work to do to make this a real quality hostel. The atmosphere is alright. The owners are friendly and it is easy to meet other backpackers.
This is an average hostel. The building could use some fresh paint and a new pool table, but the beds are comfortable and the common rooms are alright. The location is good and the owners friendly, so its definitely not a bad choice if you want to stay a night or two in Wanganui.
