Lake Tekapo is one of the most amazing lakes in New Zealand and also a lovely little town on one corner of the lake. The town is really small, with just essential shops, a few cafes, some hostels and resorts, and a gas station. This makes Lake Tekapo a quiet place where you can enjoy amazing views, do some hiking, and relax while enjoying fresh air. Although a quiet place during the year, the summer months are the exception -- it can get a bit crowded in the resorts, so make sure you book your Lake Tekapo hostel in advance.
The most amazing, not-to-be-missed thing about this town is the lake itself -- there is something about the blue of this lake that you can only understand once there. The explanation seems simple -- it is due to the kind of stones that are in the bottom of the lake; even though, it's easy for you to get hypnotised with it.
There are two good walks near the town that can give you a perspective of the landscape. One of the walks will take you to the Mount John University Observatory and let you discover that the mount has a very clear atmosphere without pollution and very good conditions at night to watch the sky. After the observatory you'll have a long, two-hour walk through the most amazing views of Lake Tekapo and of the landscapes that fill the territory to the north. There is another walk in the east part of town that will take you through the grain fields full of sheep, and although the views are not so wonderful as in the first walk, it is still worth it!
There are only few hostels in Lake Tekapo, but all of them have a great price/quality relation. Lake Tekapo's hostels are the perfect place for meeting all kinds of other backpackers usually ending their journey in New Zealand, so you can count on a lot of good stories about the country. Don't expect any kind of nightlife here, because there is only one pub open until late.
