Great Memory from Tailor Made Backpackers
I still remember my wedding in 13 Dec 2012 and I stay 1 night in Tailor-Made on 12 Dec 2012, the room looked great and tidy. Before my wedding, Mr.Michael (I think he is the host from tailor-made) prepared fresh flowers and the room for prepare our wedding after check-out. It is unexpected experience that I want to share. They are so nice person. I thank him so much and hope all the best to Tailor-made.
Tailor-Made-Tekapo Backpackers is a cluster of single-story detached houses, set in nicely landscaped grounds with a BBQ pit and a swing-set for the children. A central building houses the reception area, a bright kitchen, and a comfortable lounge. Most other buildings are residential, though there is a separate laundry building with two washers and two dryers (the price for laundry is relatively cheap).
The hostel is about a quarter mile from the Intercity bus stop at Reflections Cafe (which is also the shoreline of Lake Tekapo). Take the crosswalk across State Highway 8 and turn right; don't do what we did and head left down the hill! If you've turned right at the crosswalk, Aorangi Crescent will be the first road to your left. From there, as a sign tells you, it'll be a three-hundred-meter uphill walk to Tailor-Made. The slope's not too steep. Aorangi Crescent is a pleasant residential neighborhood; you'll pass a community center and a school on your climb. If you're driving, Tailor-Made does have off-street parking on a gravel lot inside the compound.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Outside, the houses have white siding and big front porches with comfortable furniture. Inside, walls are painted in a wide variety of cheerful solid colors. Most rooms are singles, doubles, or triples, but there is one dorm with six beds (no bunks). Showers and toilets (in separate rooms) are only a short distance down the hall. Hot water seems to be plentiful, and the shower rooms are large enough to serve as changing rooms. All bedrooms lock automatically upon exit; toilet and shower rooms may be bolted from inside.
The eat-in kitchen is a long room with two refrigerators, a stove, two sinks, a hot-water dispenser, and lots of counter space. There are plenty of bowls, plates, pots, and pans. There is a small spice bin, and hostelers are encouraged to pick fresh herbs from the garden. The comfortable lounge has sofas, armchairs, and a log fireplace; books and games are also available. There are two computers for guests' use, and Wi-Fi is also available for purchase by the hour, the day or the week. The Wi-Fi works in the common areas and in at least some of the bedrooms.
Most guests are international travelers staying for only a night or two. People are friendly, but this is not a place to party (there are families with children). The houses are quiet, with most people sleeping, by 10 p.m. All buildings are non-smoking, but people smoke on the porches, so some smoke seeps into the hallways.
Tailor-Made-Tekapo is an excellent choice for a vacationing family, or for anyone seeking a quiet, clean, cheap-but-cheerful home away from home.
This is a hostel that lands directly in the centre range of hostel/backpacker stays. It has many plus points for the average traveller, and though is certainly a backpackers and not a hotel it caters to many different types of travellers, and so the vibe it offers is a diverse and pleasantly mixed one.
There seems to be a good variety of travellers that come through this area, and on any given night you may be staying with any kind of group which makes for a much nicer atmosphere. You would as likely see a family group visiting as a 20 year old backpacker on a gap year, and you don't arrive feeling suddenly that you're staying in a cruddy version of a college dorm.
There's a very homey feel to Tailor Made, which has a really nice location just about three minutes walk from the quaint little village of Lake Tekapo (which sits directly on the mind bogglingly blue lake itself) and yet is secluded enough that you are not on the main road and can sit outside the hostel on a cool night (or on a very cold night if you choose) and quietly enjoy the stars above the Lake Tekapo sky which are famous (and rightfully so) for their brilliance.
The hostel itself is run by a friendly and very helpful couple who live across the street and though the place does feel very comfortable and inviting you don't ever feel that you are a stranger staying in someone's home.
The rooms are for the most part quite comfortable and though the dcor is very dated and not the flashiest hostel you will find in New Zealand it is very clean and tidy and kept in good order.
The bathrooms are very clean and there are plenty of showers and toilets for the shared facility rooms. The showers (though not the best dcor) are actually excellent. Two in particular are very spacious and the water pressure and temperature is always superb. Lake Tekapo is in the alpine mountain region just east of Mount Cook and gets very cold in the winter, but the big fire that is always going in the lounge area of the hostel means that there is always more than enough hot water for showering and washing up.
The facilities are good, offering internet access (though like most places in New Zealand for the extortionate rate of $2 for 20 minutes) A spacious and clean kitchen with plenty of fridge space and kitchen utensils to use. It's quite a social kitchen, there seems to always be a group cooking a large and wonderfully smelling meal.
The lounge area is again dated but comfortable with some magazines, books and games to choose from, but there is no TV anywhere in this hostel including in the ensuite rooms. This makes for a nice environment in the common room areas, but can be a bit disappointing when you are ready to retire to your room.
They offer dorms, twins, quads, doubles and double ensuites for reasonable prices (without BBH cards the dorm bed is $25 a night and the double ensuite is $74) a very good price for the oddly costly area of Lake Tekapo and not far off the average New Zealand budget accommodation.
There are also a laundry area and free tennis courts that can be used by the guests.
All in all a nice, well priced choice to stay in the area. Possibly it's nicest selling point is the garden area which is well kept and very inviting chill out in the hammock out front if the weather allows, or have your lunch on one of the picnic tables. There's a great BBQ area out back with a stunning view of the snow capped mountains in the background.
Tailor Made also has very comfortable beds which are always nice after a long day on the road.
This is a great place to stay. It has spotlessly clean, well-priced rooms and very clean ablution areas. It also has internet access at $2 for 15 minutes, a roomy lounge area with board games and a Contessa fireplace. There is a kitchen with the usual amenities ovens, toaster, microwave, fridge complete with marker pen for labelling your food, and jugs, as well as cutlery and crockery.
If you have a sleeping bag then it may be worth bringing it as linen is an extra $2 per person (note that rooms with en-suites have linen included). The backpackers is a member of BBH http://www.bbh.co.nz/, and the beds are discounted if you are a member of BBH. Membership is probably worth getting if you are staying in 5 or more hostels during your stay in New Zealand.
A word on Lake Tekapo it can get freezing, after all, the lake is fed by snowy mountains, so do bring warm clothes. The hostel itself is 300 metres from the Visitors Centre on State Highway 8 and clearly sign-posted. Thoroughly recommended.
