Flores is a small island in Peten, Guatemala. To get there, you have to travel through the town of Santa Elena and then over the bridge to get there. The bridge is within walking distance from one side to the other and this is really convenient, as it gives you access to the supermarket and other major amenities that you won’t find in Flores.
The town of Flores itself is beautiful. There are multiple activities that you can do from swimming at the docks, taking a canoe out for the day, going to visit the rope swing, or visiting the island museum off the coast and the lookout at El Mirador on the other side of the river. They also have quite a few quaint markets and shops that are worth exploring down the cobblestone streets.
The major attraction for Flores, however, are the ruins at Tikal. There are ample transportation companies that will offer you transportation and guided tours throughout the ruins. Make sure that you check around to get the best deal. The increasingly popular El Mirador hike can also be started in Flores -- it's a five-day hike into the largest of the Mayan ruins that have been discovered but not yet excavated.
Hostels in Flores are scattered over the island, but given the sheer size of the island itself, it only takes ten minutes to walk from one side to the other so you will be close to whatever attractions and amenities you will need on the island itself.
