Atherton is the main city in Atherton Tablelands in Queensland, Australia and it is where you will find the most hostels in the area. This region is best known for having beautiful landscapes, formed by more than sixty volcanoes that created a vast scenario of gentle hills and amazing waterfalls -- more than one hundred -- cascading over cliffs of basalt that cover part of the area. There is also a perfect mixture with the remaining rainforest that covers a large area and is the home of numerous species of fauna and flora that you can explore easily. One thing you shouldn't miss is the Halloran's Hill Environmental Park that was built in a crater from an extinct volcano.
The city of Atherton is prosperous and gets increasing numbers of visitors each year; while there are more tourists, it never loses its peacefulness and charm, and looks like an oasis in the Tropical Tablelands, away from the tourists crowds on the coast.
Upon arriving, visit the Atherton Tableland Information Centre, whose very competent staff can give you a lot of information about the area and help arrange everything you need to explore the area either via tours or by yourself. They can also help you with accommodation bookings in the area, even outside Atherton.
Atherton is less than one hundred kilometers distance from Cairns and is easily reachable by bus. Although, if you have a car, that will be a short ride from Cairns and it will be the best way to explore the Atherton Tablelands.
Atherton hostels are really nice places that will allow you to ask more information about the area, and easily you will find other travelers. The hostels in Atherton are good value for money -- you should try to stay in the city centre -- and they will be your first step to the amazing peaceful and wild scenarios of the Tablelands.
