Lombok is one of the many stunning islands of Indonesia. It is the island located adjacent to Bali, from where you can get a ferry to Lombok for a fairly good price. Most people come to Lombok to spend time on the Gili Islands. There are loads of different hostels on the main island of Gili named Trawangan, or popularly known as Gili T. Fewer hostels exist on the smaller, less popular islands of Gili Air and Gili Meno. If you want to stay in a hostel here, it is a good idea to book in advance as hostel beds can go quickly.
The capital city of the island of Lombok is Mataram. Airplanes arrive and depart from the capital on a frequent basis, so fly there if that’s your preferred method of travel. When traveling from other islands, however, it is usually more convenient and cheaper to take a ferry. There are hostels available in Mataram if you are passing through, but otherwise there isn't really a great deal to do there. The same goes for Senggigi. This main tourist strip’s beaches aren't great and there isn't a lot to do here, but it is a great place to settle yourself in a hostel for a day to organize any other trips you want to do around Lombok and beyond. Some of the trips organized from here include climbing the incredible Mount Rinjani and taking a sailing trip across the northern coast of Indonesia through the Komodo Islands to see the Komodo dragons all the way over to Flores. If you organize these trips on the internet or from other islands, you will wind up paying more than if you make your plans in Senggigi and bargain with the vendors there.
Many surf junkies head south for the popular surfing that is to be had. There are hostels in the main area known as Kuta Lombok (and not to be confused with Kuta Bali). It is a much quieter region and the hostels in the area should have information on the best waves for the day and where to find them.
Traveling around Lombok is done by bus, which makes very infrequent stops and departures. Ask your hostel for advice on the best way to get around from place to place.
