Shuyuan Hostel Reviews

If you're in Xi'an, then Shuyuan Hostel really is the place to be. It is the perfect blend of comfortable, friendly, and social -- and the location is unbeatable.

The Location

Shuyuan Hostel is in a great location, right next to the southern (main) entrance of the city's famous ancient city walls. It is also very central, and is only about a ten-minute walk to the Drum and Bell Tower and a fifteen-minute walk to Xi'an's famous Muslim food street. Yum! The hostel is also very easy to get to from Xi'an Railway Station. Just hop on the 603 bus, and get off when you get close to the city walls. The hostel is literally facing the inside rim of the wall so just walk to the right for a few metres alongside the wall until you see it. There will be two lion statues waiting at the entrance to greet you.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel offers four-, six-, and eight-bed dorms as well as a range of private rooms. The rooms are located around three different courtyards that span the building. Request a dorm in the third courtyard if you want a bit more peace and quiet as the hostel bar is located in the basement of the second courtyard.

The dorm rooms are all a good size with comfortable, quite large bunk beds. The rooms also have lockers (bring your own padlock) and controllable air-conditioning. The rooms are also kept sufficiently clean and are great value for the low price.

There are a number of shared toilets and showers scattered throughout the building, meaning you never really have to wait to use them. The third courtyard only has squat toilets, but the second courtyard has both Western and squat toilets. The showers are a comfortable size with a curtain inside the stalls and space to hang your belongings. The water pressure and temperature are also really good. The toilets and showers are kept very clean and appeared to be checked by the very thorough cleaner multiple times daily.

Common Spaces

Although the rooms in this hostel are great, the common areas in this hostel really make this hostel stand out. Shuyuan has multiple spaces to meet, sit, and chat with other travelers. The reception area has comfy couches and the three courtyards have tables and couches where you can hang out. At the back end of the hostel is the Traveller's Cafe, which has a cool vibe and offers yummy-looking, mostly Western food at a reasonable price. Located in the basement is the Park Qin Bar, which is apparently China's only Terracotta Warrior-themed bar. This bar has a really great vibe and is the perfect place to meet not just other travelers, but locals as well. At the time of writing, guests are also offered one free beer a night if they show the bar their room card.

It is also worth mentioning that the hostel has a number of pets -- a cat called Cotta, and two dogs, including an adorable puppy named Panda.

Summary

The staff are very friendly and speak good English. They are more than happy to help you out with advice about tours and things to do in Xi'an. We recommend a stay here!

Awesome hostel!

Rooms were decent and cheap. Probably wouldn't recommend the hostel rooms (not enough bathroom facilities), but the doubles were cheap and not bad at all. And considering the great atmosphere which includes several comfortable sitting areas, I thought it was one of the best hostels we stayed at in China. We hung out and read on one rainy day and it was great. This place has an awesome bar (guests get one free beer a night) and a fantastic cafe with excellent breakfast (one free coffee too). They have a bakery that makes great banana bread, a refreshing change from the standard hostel fare! Tip, if you are on an extreme budget, you can even get more free beers for singing a karaoke song. My only complaint is that they need more employees as the girls at the front desk are way overworked and you usually have to wait thirty minutes to get anything done, but the Terracotta Army is way cheaper and a much better experience if you just go to the train station yourself and pay $1 for one of the many green Terracotta buses (no tour group, no time limit, no shopping stops). You end up paying about 70 RMB instead of 200 or 300. As for the complaints about noise, this place is massive and you could probably just switch rooms, although it seemed to me there were signs everywhere about noise and the upstairs area closed around 10 or 11. Also, the hostel is located next to a street full of great bars with outdoor patios.

Xian ShuYuan International Youth Hostel is located inside the old city, close to several attractions. They offer free pick up from the train station. The hostel has a bar, a restaurant, and many cheap places to eat around! The hostel itself it is a preserved traditional Chinese courtyard house, what makes it a great place to stay to feel the traditional Chinese architecture.

The Location

With great location in the city centre of Xi'an, the hostel is located in the southern part of the central walled area of the city, and it is very convenient to many places you will want to visit and see. You can rent a bike or walk to most of the places such as the drum and bell tower, the Arab Quarter, and right outside the hostel you have an access to the top of the city wall. If you prefer to stay and chill out, the hostel offers all sort of activities depending on the day of the week, so do not forget to check that out!

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel offers different options for every budget -- they have very cheap dorm beds and a bit more expensive double or twin rooms that can compare to any three- or four-star hotel's service. The dorms for the price are very good value -- they even offer dorms with only two beds! if you are on a very tight budget you can ask for a bed on the basement, which are really good value -- the ventilation is quite good, and all dorms come with lockers where you can use your own padlock to feel safe. The private rooms come with private bathrooms with twenty-four-hour hot shower. On the other side if you are staying on a dorm, you will need to check the specific times for hot water available for showers. The rooms and communal showers are very well kept and clean, in the showers there is even a curtain to separate your clean and dry clothes so they do not get wet.

Common Spaces

There are many places where you can relax, chill out, or have a beer at the hostel. At the reception there is a small lounge with couches, and computers where you can access the internet for free! There are four computers and they also offer free Wi-Fi in case you are traveling with your own laptop. If you need to burn your photos to a disk, you will have to pay for that service and they will do it for you, as there are not DVD or CD burners on the free computers.

There is an inside garden with chairs and tables where you can sit and chill for a while. They also have a restaurant where you can purchase breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but prices are not on the cheap side. The food is really good, and they also give you a free welcome coffee (only on check in), and for every night you stay at the hostel, you are entitled to a free beer that you can have at the bar. It is conveniently located downstairs and away from the rooms so you do not hear any noise in case you just want to sleep. At the restaurant they offer a library where you can swap your books, but they ask two of your books for one of theirs.

There is a ping pong table also located in the basement that you can use until 10 p.m. so you do not disturb other guests after that time with the noise. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly although their tours are a bit overpriced compared to other places. They also have laundry services and almost everything you might need. They have list of places that are recommended to go for dinner as well.

Summary

It is a great place to stay. Whether you are on a budget or not, they have rooms that will suit every need. The place is full of travelers from all around the world that you can meet and chat. If you like nightlife, you can head down to the bar or if you are just looking for a quiet evening, you can chill out in one of the several living rooms around the house.

My husband and I stayed here for a few nights in a double room with our own shower. We would not recommend this hostel for several reasons. Information -- they do not have very much information on trains, planes, Xi'an, or phone cards. Isn't information supposed to be the strength of a hostel? Rooms -- the rooms are dingy and old with uncomfortable beds. Noise -- this is the noisiest place we have stayed in in all of Asia. The women working there are shouting loudly by 7 a.m. every morning and keep going until after midnight, the travelers are drinking in the courtyards past 1 a.m., the dog is usually barking in the morning plus the doors to the rooms have to be slammed to shut them.

Construction -- still going on and adds to the noise. Food -- ordered breakfast one morning and the toast was soggy wet. No cleaning -- this is particularly gross when you consider that you can't flush your toilet paper down the toilet so it stays in your room until you vacate. Laundry -- there are no facilities for you to do it yourself so someone there does it for you. The problem is there is no dryer so they hang it on the bannister of the courtyard. Ours was hung out during the rain and when we found it people were leaning against it smoking. That about covers the lowlights. The only plus was the price. Find somewhere else to stay in Xi'an!

Unfortunatly i arrived at night into Xi'an and finding the place was rather difficult what with road works/development on the go. However, that being said i cannot fault this establishment. The staff spoke excellent English, and were great company, the food catered for everyone and was of a high standard, and the rooms were what i needed (a bed and air conditioning after a long hot day). The courtyards in the centre of the building were fantastic at two a.m. for a quiet drink. I originally intended on staying for only the two nights but i met some really genuinly nice folks here from all walks of life, and even after six nights i was sad to be leaving. Anybody who passes this way definitely check in.

The hygene standard of the shared showers and toilets really drag the rating of this hostel down -- perhaps it is better in en-suite rooms because the showers and especially the toilets were plain dirty and not very nice to use. The quality of hostels in China has improved greatly from when I first came in 2003 -- the quality in Beijing probably being the highest -- but they have stayed at the basic level in this hostel which I have stayed both in 2003 and 2006. Location is excellent though.

I had a great time at Shuyuan hostel. The room was fine, had a good shower and decent restaurant. The staf was very friendly and helpful. I forgot the charger for my camera at the room and two weeks later (didn't know I forgot it there) I sent them an email about it and they answered me the next day. They organised someone who was coming to Shanghai to bring it with him and I recovered it the charger one week later in Shanghai.
