La Casa Roja Hostel Reviews

La Casa Roja Hostel is a Colonial-style hostel located in the center of Santiago. It provides you with budget friendly prices, spacious environments, and friendly atmosphere. It offers a pool, a pool table, and two bars. Come here if you want to enjoy a social living space amongst other backpackers in the center of Santiago.

The Location

La Casa Roja is located in the vibrant capital city of Chile, just a quick bus ride from the central bus station, and within walking distance to the Universidad de Chile and Palacio de la Moneda. It is just a few blocks removed from the principal thoroughfare, Bernardo O'Higgins. Those who come here seek the center of Chilean urbanization, as many of the major attractions are within walking distance. Buses, metros, and taxis pass by every minute, and small shops line the Avenue of Brasil, just a block from the hostel. The hostel itself is notable for its traditional Colonial architecture -- noisy floorboards included.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel has a number of different rooming options, including doubles, triples, quadruples, twenty-bed dormitories, privates, and matrimonials. All rooms offer lockers and hot water. The beds feature comfy, cushioned mattresses; fluffy pillows; and wool blankets. Wall outlets are hard to come by, and no reading light or table is provided alongside the beds.

Bathrooms are shared by all rooms, and present on both floors of the hostel. Bathrooms feature two toilets and two shower stalls. Shower stalls have a small shelf for clothing storage and changing space for before and after your shower. Showers have good warmth and water pressure, and are clean. Environmentally friendly towels can be purchased.

Common Spaces

The hostel offers controlled entry, and twenty-four-hour reception. Outside, you will find a spacious pool area with a convenient poolside bar open in the afternoon until dark. Bar service then switches to the interior, where you will find another bar that is open until the late hours of the night. Finally, beer can also be purchased at the front desk. In short, the cup overfloeth. Due to its bar services, the hostel prohibits you from drinking outside alcoholic beverages on its premises.

The common areas are divided throughout the house. The upstairs features a Wi-Fi area, with three computers for community use, and a TV room equipped with DirecTV. Downstairs features a pool table, the bar, and a room with a single reading chair in it. Seating space is spread throughout the hostel, and features very comfortable couches. The kitchen has plenty of cooking space, and food storage space. It features an island area for additional counter space, and is well equipped for the capacity of the hostel. Breakfast is not included. The front desk is where you will find information about the city, maps, bike rental, and serves as a meeting place for hostel-arranged activities like beer-pong tournaments on Wednesdays, and asados (BBQs) on Fridays.

La Casa Roja is a Colonial-style hostel located in the center of Santiago. It provides a pool and pool table, excellent proximity to local attractions, and a social atmosphere overflowing with beer and backpackers.

Interesting place

Lovely old building with comfortable beds. All sports channels on TV. A little way from the centre but goodish bars and restaurants near by. Shame there's no breakfast. Great staff.

Really interesting building

Huge, high-ceilinged, beautiful tiles, and wood paneling make this an unusual and worthwhile stop. Great staff. Good value. Not an interesting part of the city though.

Try a different hostel

Location acceptable. Many things here makes you say "if only you guys did this." Nice common areas and the pool is probably cool in the summer. Overpriced at $15USd/night; overpriced at $10/night too since pretty much nothing is included (you can find this price online but not in their lobby unless you argue). A big problem is there are permanent residents that need to get booted, a couple of which don't seem to have any connection with the backpacker culture, while others are basically there to greet the new girl and make noise. Breakfast costs an additional 4USD. Wifi coverage spotty. Need to replace the mattresses, buy real pillows, fix some lockers. Prohibited to bring in outside beverages (you are not a real hostel if you have this policy); must buy theirs for double the price. Also run a travel agency next to reception: buy buy buy. Bathrooms lack hand soap, towels, daily unclogging of the showers, and one of the two men's bathrooms closed indefinitely. Bring earplugs, as sound travels incredibly well and there's a lot of it. Dorm in the front is particularly loud with people coming/going all night, talking in the lobby all night, music from reception all night. Overall not recommended.

Almost great

well, this hostel has everything you want -- lots of space, chill out areas, travel agency, laundry, 24 hour reception, food/drinks available, wi-fi, spacious rooms. but there is just one problem. the place has quite a few 'long term' residents, who are working in exchange for free accom. these people have taken over the hostel, and the bar belongs to them -- so too does the music (and its volume), the kitchen, the garden, reception, and anywhere else they decide to go. i spoke to a few people in the hostel and they agreed that this was a problem -- if you stay here, dont expect to be greeted with a warm welcome unless either a single girl or interested in the consumption of drugs.

La Casa Roja is popular in Santiago with a good reputation amongst travelers. Therefore, the crowd you will find here is very international with a high concentration of English-speaking people. The main downside is that the hostel allows smoking, so there is a smoky odour throughout the corridors, but not in the dorms as they are nonsmoking. The colonial high ceilings and wide corridors also contribute to the charming feeling of this hostel.

The Location

La Casa Roja is located in the popular Barrio Brasil. If arriving from the airport, it's close to the metro station Heros, where the airport shuttle drops you off. If arriving in Santiago by bus, get the metro to the station Republica. Good walking directions are on the website of La Casa Roja. It's within walking distance to a medium-sized supermarket, close to a little park with a few cafes and a launderette (discounts for a slightly further away launderette are available at reception), and opposite a Shell petrol station.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The building has very high ceilings throughout, which gives it a great atmosphere. The dorms are a good size with comfortable bunk beds and lockers. The bathrooms/toilets are located in the hallway and are plenty for the number of guests this hostel can accommodate. Both rooms and bathrooms are also cleaned daily, which is always great. The showers are functional, with a bit of changing space, a soap dish, and a hook for your towel and/or clothes. Rooms all have a door key.

La Casa Roja also has a few private double or twin rooms, some with balcony onto the street, some locked into the building (warmer in the winter, than the ones on the outer walls of the building), some with possibilities of ensuite. In any case, a selection of breakfast dishes is available for a fee, so see the menu at the reception.

Common Spaces

The common spaces are great, with not only comfortable common rooms with many sofas and coffee tables, but also sofas and little sitting areas along the wide corridors throughout the place. Every corner is a place to socialise with the hip crowd that comes here. Sadly for the nonsmokers, smoking is allowed in those nice sit-down lounges. There is a book exchange on the ground floor, along with a travel desk and many brochures to help you plan your travel. On the ground floor you will also find free locked luggage storage (the rule is, if you stayed one night, they'll store your bag one week), internet, and a vending machine of soft and alcoholised drinks and a few snacks.

Also on the first floor is the large communal kitchen and eating room with wooden benches, and out the back, the garden and pool with its poolside bar, which operates only in summer. On the first floor, you will find the TV room and many more places to sit on a comfy sofa.

La Casa Roja is a really awesome place to meet fellow travelers, especially English speakers but also French and Spanish to name a few. Although it is smoky, the atmosphere compensates. The high ceilings and colonial architecture give it a great old-style look. This is definitely a good place to put your bags down in Santiago.
