Ipanema Club Hostel Reviews

Crab Hostel Brasil has the perfect location in wonderful city of Rio de Janeiro. This is a nice hostel located in Ipanema, on the second road from the beach -- this means less than two minutes to reach it. The hostel is really good looking on the inside, with a nice lounge area near the reception and a cool kitchen on the first floor with everything you need to cook your own meals. Although the hostel has four floors, you can find Wi-Fi in almost every place. Usually you have breakfast included and is good considering the Brazilian standards -- you can find bread, cheese or ham, butter, fruits, milk, cereals, and coffee.

The Location

This hostel is located near one of the best beaches in Rio de Janeiro -- Ipanema Beach -- in a quiet and safe street. Nearby you can find everything you need less than two minutes away -- restaurants and take-aways, grocery stores, coffee houses, buses, taxis, subway, and the beach -- Ipanema and Leblon are really near. You will need the address to find the hostel, as you cant spot it from the street (this is good for security reasons). You will spot the logo when you reach the door. They also have security twenty-four hours and you will need a card to access the hostel. If you arrive by car, it will be very hard to get a parking space near the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorms are not really big and sometimes may get a little bit messy -- mainly during weekends when there are some Brazilian guests coming to Rio de Janeiro to take part in the best of the baladas -- the nightlife in Rio. You will need to make your own bed with linen provided at the reception. The bathrooms are shared and if you stay in the mixed dorm, the bathroom will be outside the dorm. The bathrooms are usually well kept. The showers are good, with enough pressure, and you will have space to put all your stuff.

Common Spaces

This hostel has a nice living room with TV just near the reception that looks more like a lounge area to kill some time and chill out after the crazy nightlife of Rio de Janeiro. There is free Wi-Fi in all the communal areas and you can also find computers, but you will have to pay to use it. The kitchen is small, but not many guests seem to use it -- there are some cheap restaurants nearby. Although a small place, kitchen seems the best place to get to know people in the hostel.

Summary

The hostel itself looks nice and is in a safe area of Ipanema. Having the beach and calado (boardwalk) just two minutes away, this is the perfect location to stay in Rio de Janeiro. For this reason, you can expect the price for this hostel to be a little bit up, but if you dont have big budget constraints it should be affordable; anyway, it represents good value for money if you compare with other hostels in the same area.

Pluses: Great location, very clean, staff seem more friendly than before, safe location, and they allowed me to stay for one night. They were willing to let me cancel the rest of my five-day reservation after trying out only one night (but I only paid one night at first).

Minuses: Because it's smack within some residential buildings, it needs to be quiet at night no partying, etc. It's crowded. The couples' rooms are separated by thin walls. My room didn't have a window and it was very hot. Even though a grate in the wall above connected to another room, which had air-conditioning, the room was still very hot. I did have a fan.

Because it is in Ipanema, the hostels' value isn't great for a couples' roomR$130especially if you are single. There are many posted rules (partly because of the residential status) with the poorly translated "please don't insist" on the bottom of each note.

This hostel became known as 'Crap Hostel' along the Gringo Trail in South America. I have never met so many people who encountered problems with the staff and honoring bookings.

We booked this hostel through a different website during Carnival. They did not honor the booking we made for four nights, and in fact they threw us out of the hostel after one night because they could sell our beds as a 'carnival package' to two other people for triple the price. Furthermore, the owner refused to reimburse us for the full amount of what we paid for our four-night stay.

The rooms are extremely overcrowded. There were six triple bunks in our small room. Everyone shared one very dirty bathroom. There was nowhere to store your luggage.

We shifted to another hostel in Botafogo, which was fantastic and closer to where all the locals go in Lapa.

This hostel does have an awesome location... however, the dorm rooms are extremely crowded - very little floor space AND triple bunks. Plus the atmosphere is not very friendly, with more rules than I've seen in two months combined at other hostels.
