Kick Ass Grassmarket is great for those traveling on a budget and looking for somewhere to stay close to the centre of Edinburgh.
Kick Ass Grassmarket is well located in the centre of Edinburgh. It is easily reached from the airport as well as the main bus and train station. The hostel is a short walk from the main bus and train stations (less than thirty minutes). The airport is a thirty-minute bus ride away. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes located nearby the hostel, and also there are small supermarkets where you can buy groceries to cook for yourself or sandwiches and other small foods. A lot of Edinburgh’s main attractions are very close to the hostel and the vibe of the city is very present as soon as you step out of the hostel.
At the time of stay, there is construction happening across the road from the hostel, which is noisy at approximately 8 a.m. (this is not the fault of the hostel, however it is worthy of noting if you want to avoid the noise).
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms in the hostel are relatively clean and the beds aren’t comfortable. The thirty-bed dorm is split over two levels, so it does not feel large or as if there are thirty beds in total. The dorm room itself is quite dark for most of the day, but it's not as loud as you would expect. There is a mezzanine level with ten beds on it and underneath are twenty beds. All beds are bunks, which are relatively comfortable, and each has its own locker (no padlock provided) of reasonable size, personal light, very small shelf for personal belongings and powerpoint (with USB point). You must make your own bed, but the linen is fresh and reasonable.
There are unisex bathrooms (shower and toilet) as well as female and male separate bathrooms.
These bathrooms are quite small and pokey, but provide hot-water, push-button showers. The showers have hooks and a glass door, and the change space is quite small but ok. The toilets have a shelf and there's always enough toilet paper. There are basins and mirrors, plus a hair dryer for guests to use.
There are several common spaces for guests to use. There is a space called the Treehouse, which has a book exchange, beanbags, and board games, which is a nice place to meet other travelers. There is also the main cafe space located next to the reception (guests get discounts here), and there is a pool table for entertainment. The food here is reasonable, but there is a kitchen also provided for guests to use if they wish. The kitchen is quite large and has a lot of facilities for guests to use.
The hostel also has lockers available (there is a per-day charge to use) and they are of various sizes. There is Wi-Fi in the hostel that works well.
