The Hostelz.com Review

Meninger Hotel London Hyde Park is a hotel/hostel combination that provides a quiet, clean, budget option for visitors to London.

The Location

This hostel is located in South Kensington right across the street from the Natural History Museum. The location is great if you want to be close to Hyde Park and all of the South Kensington museums. Gloucester Road Underground Station is only a five-minute walk away, giving you easy access to the rest of London as well as direct access to Heathrow Airport. Victoria Coach and Train Stations are also only about a ten-minute underground trip away, so it's a good location if arriving by long distance and international buses. The hostel is located on a very busy street, so traffic noise is loud throughout the night if on a streetside room. A few good restaurant and supermarket options are available around the hostel, but better options can easily be found in other areas of London. The hostel has a lot of conference rooms and an auditorium, so many members of the public use the building as well.

Rooms and Bathrooms

This is a large hostel with a wide range of different dorm and private rooms available. Dorm rooms range in size from small dorms with four to six beds up to large dorms with twelve beds. Bed configurations also vary, with bunks mixed in with single beds, but all beds are comfortable with solid wooden frames and individual light and powerpoint. Most dorms have an en suite bathroom but rooms on the sixth floor have shared bathrooms. Dorm rooms all have small lockers, but you must provide your own lock and it needs to be a thick lock for the locker to actually lock. Bunk beds also have lockable under-bed storage drawers in some rooms but none of the drawers would open easily in my dorm room. Private rooms are designed to suit all kind of travelers with single and double rooms all the way up to family rooms and private dorms with up to six beds. All of the private rooms come with en suite bathrooms and TVs. Air conditioning is also provided for those warmer days.

En suite bathrooms are clean and modern with a nicely functioning shower. Shared bathrooms aren't as clean, especially the ones in the basement that are open to the public users of the hostel, which have blocked, locked, and dirty toilets.

Common Spaces

Meininger Hotel London Hyde Park has a couple of different common areas for guests and conference room visitors to use. At reception you have a large lounge area with a view out to the street and a bar selling drinks and snacks as well as a small game zone. Upstairs, there is a open terrace with lots of seats, which is a nice place to relax on a sunny day. Buffet breakfast is available every morning in the restaurant for a not-so-budget-friendly price. Free luggage storage and Wi-Fi is also available. As the Meininger brand is generally labeled as a hotel, it has the feel of a hotel with a very relaxed and quiet vibe, which is great for people who don't want to stay in the typical London party hostel but it also means you won't meet too many other backpackers.

Summary

Meininger Hotel London Hyde Park is perfect for the budget traveler that wants a modern and quiet hostel with great access to the Kensington museums and Hyde Park.

Bad service but good accommodations
The staff at the reception desk was unhelpful and very slow. Although I booked a dorm room specifically for the locker, I was put in a family style room with nowhere to secure my belongings except for a safe by the front desk which did not fit my purse. The room was very clean and spacious, and the location was good, but the bad service tainted the experience.

Great Room
We've found that the staff was friendly enough to provide us with some guidance throughout the city. We stayed in two rooms, both different from one another. The first one was overcrowded and the inner bathroom to small for one person. The second room was excellent with regards to the space available. Overall it was a comfortable and quiet stay. I wouldn't mind booking there again, but be careful, as you should avoid arriving without a booking as the prices seem to increase way over average.

Dirty
The toilets on the sixth floor were blocked, and overflowed into the corridor. showers leaked also. Dormitory rooms on the sixth floor were small and over crowded, noise from the street was also a big problem. Reception staff were often rude and unfriendly. Avoid!

Lovely and clean
This is a lovely, clean, friendly place to stay. It is kid friendly and several school groups were there was I was there. The staff are very, very nice and very helpful. It was quiet at night. It is a good place for adults, families, and school groups. It is not a party place but for me that was perfect. Adults of all ages seemed welcome, even senior citizens. It is handy to the museums and the tube.

Meininger City Hostel is a a huge, if rather impersonal hostel situated just opposite the natural history museum and within easy reach of the V&A museum and Hyde Park. It is situated between Gloucester Road and South Kensington Tube Stations. Near the reception, there is a large sitting area with free tea and coffee, and an internet area and vending machines as well. However, not many people seem to hang out there, as the hostel's main clientele seems to be school parties or families -- it's not really a great hostel to meet like-minded backpackers. The storage room is in the basement, which is a bit of a drag as you have to carry your bags down. The lift leading to the rooms seems to be permanently out of order, so you have to lug your stuff up a few flights of stairs as well. The twelve-bed dorm is quite large and is self contained with a television, lockers, and two space-capsule sized toilets. The toilets are spotless and the showers are strong with lots of hot water. There are also toilets along the corridor. The three-tier bunk beds are something else altogether and can be quite coffin-like! You get to choose whichever bed you like if you come early. Beds are made for you and towels are included in the price -- just ask at the reception. Security is good and you need a key card to enter your floor. The buffet breakfast is excellent. Apart from the usual cereal and bread, you get hams and salamis as well as a variety of cheeses. There's also hot chocolate, tea, coffee, and juices on tap. Definitely a good start for a hard day of sightseeing! Meininger is an average choice -- it fulfills the basic requirements of cleanliness and security at a decent price. However, if you want a party atmosphere or a hostel with an attached bar, look elsewhere. It is more suited to families as it is relatively quiet and a good location for bringing the kids to the museums.
