Description

The Hostelz.com Review

Ají Hostel is a multi-level house on a residential street just outside the busy centre. With its communal meals, guests will find socialization very easy and natural. Rooms are located up above the common general area, making for a quiet and uninterrupted sleep when desired.

The Location

The hostel is located within walking distance of supermarkets, restaurants, and the university nightlife district. It's a twenty-minute metro ride from the main bus terminal and within a few blocks of a metro station. There is no sign on the hostel, but it's the only bright red house on its street! The main square and fresh food markets are a thirty-minute walk or ten-minute metro ride. Although the possibility of buying fresh food is not directly nearby, the property's location near plenty of peaceful parks and fountains makes up for it.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The main floor of the hostel is where all the common areas and kitchen are located; the rooms are isolated up above, away from the noise. Options include private rooms, mixed dorm, and female dorm. Dorm rooms all have six beds, and the rooms are spacious with fresh air. The rooms become very dark with very little artificial light getting in, making for great sleep. Beds are made daily and mattresses are comfy! Rooms are left unlocked, but guests are each given a locker big enough to fit a large backpack. Each room has a toilet/shower combination. Hot water is variable and pressure is lacking.

Common Spaces

The hostel's main floor is where the couches, dining room tables, and kitchen are located. There are plenty of dining room tables to create the social atmosphere with travelers in the hostel all dining together. Kitchen is existent but lacks proper equipment; without quality knives and cookware, it is very difficult to make an extensive meal. Most guests don't cook as half board is included. Although the common areas are not overly cozy with a central area where everyone can gather, the true major positive of this hostel is the communal meals where travelers are almost required to sit together and talk. There are two communal computers in a quiet places also.

Breakfast and dinner are both included. Breakfast is a serve-yourself array of eggs, fresh fruit, juice, bread, marmalade, coffee, and tea. Dinner is a basic meal, which changes from vegetarian variations of pasta and rice.

Summary

This hostel organizes evening outings and is a great place for travelers to meet, exchange stories, and leave as companions. It is a very friendly and social atmosphere where many new friends can be made at every meal. The included dinner attracts a large crowd, making this hostel busy every night! With clean, comfortable beds in quiet rooms and great prices, this is an outstanding choice in Santiago.

Good location, great food, friendly staff
Great breakfast and dinner, comfortable beds, clean en suite bathrooms in every room, plenty of space and really good Wi-Fi. The only thing I could find fault with is that I stayed in the top of the building which was extremely hot so hard to sleep.

We had a great experience
The staff is very friendly, the rooms are clean. We met new friends. I would probably get a private room next time. Just so i dont have to worry about waking others up.

Chilli Hostel is an appropriately painted red bricked building about 5 minutes away from the funky neighbourhood of Bellavista. The hostel can arrange airport shuttles or you can get one yourself from the airport at around 4500 pesos. If you are coming by Metro get off at Salvador, it's about a five minute walk. It is a very safe area, even though the hostel is tucked away down a backstreet. The hostel is spotlessly clean. The dorm rooms are very spacious with brightly coloured duvets and comfy beds. There are large lockers in the room big enough for your large backpack, but there are no locks on the doors of the dorms. The bathrooms are immaculate, although the toilet cubicles are a little small. In each corner of the shared bathroom are two shower cubicles. An odd layout, but everything functions so nothing to complain about. The communal kitchen is a bonus especially in South America. Although small, it is adequate for cooking a nice meal, with a free standing oven and two fridges to store food. A free breakfast of toast / cereal and tea or coffee makes this the social highlight of the hostel, and a great way to meet new people. There is also a small funky TV Lounge and a patio to relax. The patio comes with an imaginative bath tub although no one was seen bathing in it. There is free internet however there is only one computer inconveniently located in the hallway. Free Wi-fi however for those with laptops is a bonus. The receptionists speak English and can advise on where to go in Santiago. There is no selling of tours here but a very small notice board with a few leaflets pinned up. The hostel could be improved by providing more information about Santiago and better maps for those who have just arrived.
