Hostal Guatefriends has an excellent location if you need access to the airport, but forget it if you want to check out the tourist attractions, restaurants, or shops.
The Location
This location is really all about the airport; there are some museums and the artisan markets within walking distance, but that sweet, sweet airport walk is really what this hostel is all about. That's a shame, as it is a nice little hostel. There is not much going on in the surrounding area; there are a few little corner stores, but any larger stores are quite a distance away and restaurants are thin on the ground. While the hostel is within walking distance of the airport, as the neighbourhood can feel a little sketchy, specifically at night, it might be worth taking advantage of the hostel's free shuttle service.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorm rooms come in three-, four-, and five-bed varieties and are a little on the small side. The doors to the rooms do lock, but as you aren't given a key all you can do is lock yourself or your roommates out. This is an annoyance, as the rooms do not contain lockers for valuable possessions. Private rooms come in two- and three-person varieties with the options for en suite.
There is only one common bathroom, but it contains two separate shower and the same for toilets, plus two sinks side by side. While they are clean, they are very cramped; the showers have no internal hooks or racks on which to put clothes. There are shower racks, but as these hang under the shower head, they're useless for holding your clothes. Toilets suffer a similar issue as well, but with the added problem of low doors so accidental peekings are a distinct possibility.
Common Spaces
Common areas are restricted to the porch, but what a porch it is! Lots of seating options and tables make this a great place to hang out and relax. Plus, there's a slide and a bunch of toys for kids. Board games and books are available to rent (though we aren't entirely sure, because the English translation of most of the hostel's notices leaves some room for ambiguity) from the front desk.
The kitchen is very well stocked with all the modern requirements for self-catering, it can get a little cramped and messy during the morning when the hostel's free breakfast is being served but at other times it is fine. Luckily, there is a very homey dining room attached to the kitchen that gets people out of the kitchen more quickly.
Summary
This really is a great hostel in every way except for its location; the staff/owner are friendly, the common areas are top notch, and it is clean (if a little cramped). It's simply far away from not only the tourist attractions but from decent stores and restaurants as well (going to the airport for dining options is possible). Give Guatefriends a chance if you are on your way to or from the airport or if you don't mind public transport and just want somewhere cool to chill.

• IF YOU ARE COMING FROM THE AIRPORT, FALLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS:
• Once you get out of the glass doors of the airport, go left, that's the main entrance to the airport by car, but you can walk through.
• When you get to the main street, you will see a traffic circle with a big tree (Ceiba - national tree) in front of it. Carefully cross the other side of the traffic cricle, you will see a rental car HERTZ on the background.
• Once you have crossed you will reach the next street, in front you will have HERTZ and on the corner of the street on the left side there is a Church, go to the left and you will see a slope, walk to the end of the street, there are exactly 5 blocks.
• When you reach the end, you will see a green house, on the left a large gray cellar and again on the left, there we are, 2 yellow gates and a sign in the middle with the name of the hostel. GUATEFRIENDS HOSTEL!
• IF YOU COME BY CAR FROM THE ZOO, FALLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS:
• Once you pass the zoo, continue all the way until you reach the airport, you will reach the first roundabout where there is a statute, turn around and go straight on until you reach the second roundabout that has a large tree (Ceiba - national tree) .
• Cross on the first street to the right and when you have crossed you will reach the next street, in front you will have the HERTZ car rental and on the corner of the street on the left side there is a Church, cross to the left and you will see a descent, walk to the end of the street, it is exactly 5 blocks.
• When you reach the end, you will see a green house, on the left a large gray cellar and again on the left there we are, 2 yellow gates and a sign in the middle with the name of the hostel. GUATEFRIENDS HOSTEL!
• IF YOU COME BY CAR FROM THE DOME OR THE MUSEUMS,FALLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS:
• Follow the street completely straight, try to go on the right side of the roade and do not cross anywhere, go straight, straight, straight!
• You will reach a point where the street goes down, follow the street until the end of the street, it is exactly 5 blocks.
• When you reach the end, you will see a green house, on the left a large gray cellar and again on the left there we are, 2 yellow gates and a sign in the middle with the name of the hostel. GUATEFRIENDS HOSTEL!
