The Hostelz.com Review

HI - Xi'an - Qixian (7 sages) YH Hostel is the best hostel in Xi'an, and offers a friendly, welcoming vibe that can be lacking from other hostels within the city walls. The setting is gorgeous, based within a traditional Chinese courtyard, and provides peace and tranquility away from the carnage that lies outside the front gate.

The Location

Xi'an is an easy city to navigate around once within the city walls; with the underground now up and running, you can travel up and down the main street with ease for pennies. The hostel is on the north side of the town, around a twenty-minute walk from both the bus and the train station. Most people come to Xi'an for a trip to see the Warriors, and the hostel offers all kind of tours; however China is so cheap, and the bus station is so close, it is advisable to make your own way there (take the Green Bus 306. The stop is located between the bus and train station).

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are on the cold side, as you would expect from a building that is hundreds of years old, and going to the bathroom at night can be a freezing experience, as you have to go out onto the courtyard to reach them. Once there though the bathrooms are clean, and offer a choice of Western or traditional facilities, and the showers are so warm you will never want to come out. The laundry is affordable. The bunk beds are a little on the old side, but still provide a comfortable night's sleep

Common Spaces

The hostel has a very smartly decorated bar/restaurant, with a smoking sunroom. The food on offer is tasty, but on the pricy side for China, and there is a whole host of eateries on the doorstep (once you get over the fear of no one understanding you, and going into the tiny cafes, the food and experience is wonderful, and you can eat like a king for a tiny amount).

There is also an internet room, which is coin operated, but is not very reliable (as is the case with the internet in China in general). The Wi-Fi is good and free, however it only works in the common areas, and does not quite stretch to the rooms. The outside courtyard is full of character, including a couple of dogs and cats, who are both very welcoming. Bottles of beer for a small amount are also well received by the guests.

Summary

If you want a hostel that has character, for a good price, in an ok location, then 7 Sages is the place to stay.

Fantastic
Stayed for four days here in a unique set-up in a traditional style, with connected outside courtyards. Great food, great people, great location. Wifi is only in common areas. Many trips that they promote. Cleaners accidentally took my hiking boots due to a miscommunication, but the staff went out of their way to find them for me. Amazing experience here.

Rotten eggs and pushy personnel
We arrived in the hostel in february (so this review is a little late) and although most people seem to be satisfied with this hostel, our experience was not so great. The rooms are nice and it is nice that there are movies in the common room (however you cannot watch them because the personnel is constantly asking if you want to do tours, which you can easily do yourself). In Xian we needed to arrange our visa extension and the hostel gave us the necessary papers for application. Since this process is taking some days, we wanted to stay for some days in the hostel and we told the reception but we were forced or either to move to a more expensive room or to leave. I dont think this is good service. For breakfast I was served rotten eggs. We didnt like the hostel and left thus after one night.

Outstanding!
Stayed here for 7 nights and didn't want to leave, it was 100 times nicer than our Beijing apartment! Beautiful and relaxing courtyard, common room with games, nice restaurant, friendly and helpful staff, everything was clean, and Bigo the friendly beagle! Rented solid bikes for 10 yuan/day. A staff member met us at the train station and walked us to the hostel, about 15 minutes. Only problem I could imagine is you have to go through the courtyard, and therefore outside, to get to the bathrooms. Didn't affect us since we had nice weather but could be inconvenient. Overall I loved every minute at this hostel and would recommend it to everyone!

Wow!
Hands down the best hostel I've ever stayed at (and I travel a lot). We booked a private and a couple of nights in a dorm and found everything to be clean and comfortable. The feeling of the place is great! It's relaxing and pleasant. They have hot showers, bathrooms, laundry, and a restaurant with tables and cheap beer/tea/food. It's close to the Rail station and if you let them know ahead, someone will pick you up and walk you to the hostel. Highly Highly recommend it. Doing the Terra Cotta Worriers on your own is easy. In the morning, before 11 a.m., take the bus to the site (the hot baths are on the way). You can then get off, do your thing, and come back to catch the bus back. Just ask at the front desk what bus to take. The site takes two or three hours, the drive there and back about an hour.

A good place; nice; well located; staff friendly, available, and always ready to help you. The bathroom could be improved and the room are a bit noisy (not from the street bur from people passing by), but this hostel is honestly a good place.

Beautiful Hostel, friendly, and very helpful staff. We enjoyed our two weeks there even if we had not expected to stay so long!

I really liked it here. The hostel itself is a renovated army barracks, so although the rooms may look austere to some, to others it adds to the character. The staff here were truly excellent. they met me from my train and took me to the hostel. They were also an excellent source of advice about Xi'an and it's surrounds. Good location too -- close to both the train station and the city centre attractions (Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and Muslim Quarter).
