HI - Matsuyama - Matsuyama YH Hostel is a large and comfortable hostel. At this hostel, there are private rooms and dorm rooms available, and they're spread throughout four floors of the building.
Matsuyama YH Hostel is located in the Dogo area of Matsuyama -- a large tourist area, where travelers can find several hotels, guesthouses, souvenir shops, and restaurants. It's also where the famous Dogo Onsen, Dogo Park, and several temples are located.
The Dogo area is about four kilometers from the main Matsuyama Station, and the closest public transportation stop in the area is called Dogo-Onsen. From Dogo-Onsen, Matsuyama YH Hostel is only about four hundred meters away. However, the hostel is situated halfway up a hill and can be pretty taxing and exhausting to travel up and down from.
Rooms and Bathrooms
At this hostel, there are both private rooms and dorm rooms available. Dorm rooms are separated into women- and men-only rooms; there are no mixed dorms here. Rooms in this hostel are comfy, clean, and have a very homey feel. It's a nice change that bunk beds aren't used here and rooms aren't overstuffed with as many beds as possible. Most dorm rooms seems to only hold about three or four guests, and even have small-screen TVs.
Bathrooms are small, but tidy and clean. There are sets of toilets on every floor, but shower stalls are only found on one floor. Guests can choose from traditional Japanese-style shower stalls and Western shower stalls. There's also an onsite sauna room available for guests to use at an extra fee.
There is a large kitchen area at this hostel. While there really isn't much room or kitchen facilities for guests to use here, this hostel does offer breakfast and dinner at an extra cost. There are also mini fridges on each floor for guests to use.
On the main floor, there is a living room with large sofas where you can lounge. On the second floor is a library with a huge manga collection. It's a bit crowded and overstuffed. There isn't much of a social vibe at this hostel -- most guests here seems to be local family travelers.
Matsuyama YH Hostel is a spacious and quiet hostel. It's close to some tourist attractions in the Dogo area, but is a workout up the hill to get to. There's a homey feel here, especially when they offer a communal breakfast and dinner.

A good deal
This is a nice place, very homey, although more like an old-style youth hostel than a backpackers joint. What really makes this place is the staff who are very friendly and welcoming and are a ready source of information about the surrounding area. It's located on the opposite side of Matsuyama city from the rail station and at the top of a hill -- so a bit of a trek when you first arrive, although tram no. 5 takes you from the station to the bottom of the hill. The best thing about the location is that it's a few minutes walk from Dogo Onsen hot springs bath, which you have to try when in Matsuyama. Overall it is certainly the best deal in town, but not for those looking for riotous parties.
