Bonsai Hostel, Koh Rong Sanloem

Bonsai Hostel is one of the many many hostels recently opened by Westerners in M’Pay Bay on the island of Koh Rong Samloem that all pretty much offer the same for the same price category. Still, this place feels exceptional, simply because the vibe is excellent, and after a few hours of being here you will feel like you have known everybody here forever.

The Location

M’Pay Bay is tiny, so it really does not matter where you are staying, as everything is in walking distance. Bonsai Hostel is one of the first hostels for which you will see the sign as you walk into the village from the east. However, it is not on the beach but about fifty metres inland. You definitely won’t see the sea from your window, but you are rewarded with a countryside feel and a panorama over the hills instead.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Bonsai offers many different kinds of rooms; the ones on the bottom floor are all dorms. These have a very natural feel with their bamboo furniture and wooden architecture. The beds are huge and come with mosquito nets and electronic plugs. The bathrooms are at the back of the property and are definitely a bit of a letdown compared to the rest of the hostel. They are right opposite a really messy tool shed and are really basic with certain things in need of repair.

Common Spaces

The first thing you will notice when you arrive is the big chilling area in front of the reception. There are comfy sofas here with tables, and there is also a pool table that is free to use. There is a small bar here as well where upon check-in you are treated to a free drink. On the other side of the building, there is a big garden area with plenty of hammocks and a place to hang your washing. Be careful with the many holes in the ground though! This garden area is an excellent spot for watching stars at night, which become really visible thanks to the lack of light pollution.

Summary

Bonsai Hostel is not that much different from other hostels on the island at first sight, but all the little acts of added kindness and attention that go into it make it really unique. If you like a place where everybody talks to each other, then this is definitely your place to be!
