Hostel Papagayo is located in Ometepe, a volcanic island in a lake in Nicaragua. It offers a simple and cheap accomodation and it is located at a less than five minutes' walking from the harbour, which is the only way to reach the island.
The Location
It is located in Mayogalpa, the main city of Ometepe, which is great as it is possible to find restaurants, bars, and supermarkets around. The island is very safe and it is possible to walk around at night without any worries.
Rooms and Bathrooms
It offers both private rooms and dorms with bunk beds. As it's one of the cheapest hostels on the island, the dorms are very basic, there are not plugs for electricity available for each bed, but only a few to be shared. Lockers are available but you need to have your own padlock. Bathrooms are shared by the entire hostel and there are only twoavailable, so you might need to wait a little. The place is not super clean but not dirty either. Soap is available in the toilets but not shampoo in the showers.
Common Spaces
There are hammocks, sofas, and tables just outside the reception and inside in a large room. As nightlife in Ometepe is very quiet, customers usually hang around during the evening, creating a kind of familiar vibe where everybody knows each other. Many locals usually come around the hostel in the evening as the place is run by the owner who has many friends in town that usually bring food and alcohol and share it with guests. Hence it is definitely not a party spot but a sociable hostel to meet friends and mingle with locals. The owner also rents scooters at a great rate, which are the best way to explore the island.
Free breakfast is available and there is even an option to choose from pancakes and eggs with rice and beans. A kitchen is available for guests but it is very small and the equipment looks old and dirty, so it is not very nice to cook there.
Summary
In conclusion, this place is a great choice for travelers on a budget that want to have a great contact with locals and meet other backpackers as well. The rooms and the bathrooms are very basic but the common area is nice and alive. The owner gives great tips and helps to arrange trips around the island.
