Stayed One Night -- But Loved it
I stayed at Hostal Los Lagos for one night, it is extremely close to the airport. The place was clean, had a big bathroom, and the owner Luis was super nice. Place is very safe and I must mention even though the airport was very close, Luis dropped me at 5:30 in the morning, which was a good gesture.

Friendly, helpful staff, clean
I was collected from the airport by Luis, which was great, it's only about 2 mins away. The dorm and bathroom were nice and clean. Breakfast was lovely. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Would recommend it.

Hostal Los Lagos has an atmosphere more fitting to a guesthouse than a traditional hostel. The rooms are part of the owners' house, which gives it this guesthouse feel. The couple that invites you into their home are great, very friendly, and they will go out of their way to help you. The Location The hostel is located just about next door to the airport in Zona 13. This is very convenient if you are just arriving or leaving the country, however it also means that it can be quite noisy. Fortunately at this stage it seems like the Gaute airport has very few flights in the evening so it shouldn´t disturb your sleep too much. The owners are very helpful with transport arrangements and will personally collect guests from the airport, for free. They also organise shuttles to other parts of the country and taxis around Guatemala City -- although they seem to be friends rather than official companies. There doesn´t seem to be any bus connections to other areas of the city from near the hostel so taxis are necessary to get around. It is only a couple of minutes (and dollars) by taxi to Zona Viva, the restaurant and bar area of the city and a bit further to Central Parque, where most attractions are. There are a couple of museums nearby, which you can apparently walk to, and a few very small shops on the street corner. Rooms and Bathrooms The rooms are very well kept, clean, and light with a combination of solid wooden bunks and double beds. Most of the rooms are ensuite and the bathrooms are very clean as well. The shower heating system takes a bit of time to get used to and requires a bit of juggling to get the right temperature. A few of the rooms have TVs in them, which could either be a blessing or a curse, depending on other members of the room. Common Spaces There is a lot of common space in the house. There is an upstairs TV lounge, which also has an exchange library with quite a few books. Downstairs there is another lounge and the breakfast area. The delicious typical Guatemalan breakfast includes bread, beans, and eggs. Plus there is also coffee and drinking water available at any time. Although there is a kitchen it isn't available for guest use but you can use basic cutlery if you need to. A small garden with hammocks and chairs is a good place to escape the chaos after a day in the city. There are two computers to use the internet (and Skype) for free, but they are on the slow side and pretty old. Summary Hostal Los Lagos is a very quaint, cheerful, and homey place to stay if you decide to stick around in Guatemala City. It´s safe and clean and the owners are extremely friendly and helpful -- even if you can´t speak much Spanish. It doesn´t have a typical hostel atmosphere and is more quiet and homey than fun and loud. The clientele includes traveling businessmen and families, not just backpackers. It´s a great place to stay, even if a little far from most of the action in the city (a good thing in some people's eyes).
